I'm new to the forum. I have a 2004 Tacoma standard cab, automatic 4 banger with more under carriage rust than I have mileage (64,000).

I use this truck very little. Just hauling stuff around town. Nothing heavy.

I noticed that what I believe is called the load compensator rusted off its mount and was dangling down. I secured it to the rear end so it wouldn't catch on anything.

It looks like a difficult repair if even possible with all the rust.

    Question; Do really need this?

You can replace the Load Sensing Proportioning Valve with an after-market replacement, or swap it out for a manual valve.

But if that part rusted through, I bet you have bigger issues ahead of you.

you definitely need it. It will send more fluid to the rear brakes when there is a heavier load in the rear

I agree that more issues are in the future. Just wanted to know if the loading sensor is necessary.

You can drive without it (unless you are leaking brake fluid). But braking performance will be poor

I mostly use it to haul brush to the compost facility 3 miles away. Nothing over 100 pounds.

You have NO rear brakes with rod dangling. It controls the load sensing brake proportioning valve. With rod down no pressure goes to rear wheel cylinders. With rod up too high rear brakes may lock up causing accidents,
    property damage, injuries or death.

Yikes! I guess that answers my question. I have a fair amount of mechanical ability. Could this be a DIY?
