    Hi All,

I am new here, but I thought I would come to y'all for advice. I just got my 2004 V4 2.4L Tacoma with only 95K miles. It just passed smog, and the CarFax/mechanic said it was clean before I bought it.

Recently the check engine light came on and my heart sank. I brought it to the shop bc it had p0171 and p2237. They said the A/F & downstream O2 sensors looked good, but were very loose. They tightened them and cleaned my MAF sensor. 100 miles later p2237 came back on, but no sign of p0171 which is good.

When I called back, the mechanic couldn't recall if it was a Denso sensor or not. I read that they are the most compatible with these Tacomas. I'm not sure if they trouble shot the current sensors or if they only looked at them lol. Any ideas of what the problem could be? Has anyone dealt with this code with their first gen Tacoma? I've noticed my MPG is poor.

P.S. I'm happy to be apart of the community. I'm getting a shell this weekend, I just want my dashboard to be light free. Thank you all in advance!!!!

Denso sensors are the only ones that really work well from what I recall, unless it's a OEM toyota. I believe Denso was the oem for a bunch of the sensors so it makes sense. Cross reference the p/n on Denso's site and you should get their p/n for it. I'd have them test the sensor to make sure it's actually bad, or if it's shorting on something. Or you could just change it out, I did that on my 2003 v6 double cab with the same code and it cleared it right after. If you're trying to not just throw parts at it, have it tested before replacing.

A little info on the P2237 code...

FYI it’s an I4, or In-line 4. V4 doesn’t really exist other than in marine outboard applications.

My O2 sensors ended up being knock off P.O.S sensors. I'm replacing them with the correct Denso sensors. Hopefully this solves the issue.
