Doing head gaskets is the perfect time to have the cyl heads ported , bowl blended and a perf valve job done

Funny thing is, non Toyota folks (read as neighbors), immediately said trade it in and get a new one. Uh, no. Not the way us Toyota folks roll.

I never get rid of a car doesn't matter the brand unless it comes to the point of nickel and diming me all the time. Cheaper to repair and keep one running in the long run than to have a car payment for the rest of your life with that kind of thinking.

I'm wondering if these head gasket failures are because of aftermarket coolant?
I've always used toyota pink stuff but it sounds like I need to prepare for a HG change in the future..

Couple hundred bucks for new gaskets, get the heads sent out and checked for warping and cleaning and what ever the machine shop suggest. Your looking at probably easily less than 1k$ with new gaskets and parts. Have your Mercedes buddy help you it's not that big of a job. It's time consuming but it can easily be done in a day especially with help from your buddy. Like you said that engine has plenty of life left in it. Good luck

    Okay good deal. Thank you.
I’m still thinking about it, but it does seem the consensus here on TW is that it’s not a good idea...
my wife is also encouraging me to get in there and do it the right way, and she’s usually right. So, I’m thinking I’m going to bite the bullet and change them out.

One other quick note I left out. The ebay engine I referenced in post #6 almost happened. I got cold feet when I read the reviews at BBB. F rating. What's even more odd is that it was another NC Taco. I couldn't do it. Read those reviews. Dealer installed but seller still didnt support the warranty! A rebuilt engine is nice , but labor to replace it with another one and paying shipping twice is a big risk.

At that point I went for the HG replacement.

Does not letting it warm up in winter have anything to do with it? Seems like a few popping up right now. Just checking. I have an 05 I park outside.

It's an known issue with the 05s and early 06s design flaw or something like that.

I don't think the weather matters. Was 55 and rainy the day it happened here in Charlotte.

Got some pics from inside the OR today from the techs. 134,000 miles. Will be ready for pickup today. You can see where the head gasket blew. Last pic is stripped alt bolts. Had them do that as well, no additional charge. Gave them the alt from a 2015 Taco with 35k miles to swap, since it had to come off anyways.

Congrats @Benny123 !! You made the right decision esp
w the lifetime warranty and ‘official’ fix now logged in the Toyota system. If you wouldn’t mind, could you post the the out the door price was for everything?

    Thanks!

Thanks man. Made some hard decisions but would like to keep the truck until at least 200k miles. Will post total this evening after I pick it up.

Just do routine maintenance and your truck will go way more than 200K. I had 351K on my ‘07 4.0 when I sold it a couple of years ago. It’s still going strong a few towns over:thumbsup:

Technically, the only things to deal with, on a '12+ going into an '11-, is swapping the valve covers and headers from the original engine.

Glad you have it all sorted out!

Judging by those crusty layers, the previous owner went far too long on service intervals. The oil broke down and hardened up.

Maintain a good OCI, while keeping track of that level, and your engine will last you a long time.
