I know this is an older thread, but after checking my door jam, my 2013 V6 6MT Access Cab says A04A. I was under the impression that all 6MTs were geared with 4.30, or is that just for 3rd Gens?

Yep, if memory serves me correctly, all 2nd Gen V6's have 3.73.

    2005 Tacoma PreRunner
    Good morning,

I am trying to determine which axle my 2005 Tacoma PreRunner has. The code A04A indicates a rear 8.0 3.73 open diff, but I have read elsewhere that I would like either have an 8.4" or 7.5" axle. What I am trying to determine is whether the Eaton TrueTrac 8.4" would work for my setup. Perhaps the 8.0 is referring to one thing and the 8.4 vs 7.5 is referring to something else.

I found this info on Filthy Motorsports that seems useful
    https://www.drivetrainshop.com/Articles.asp?ID=271

It would appear that I would expect my Taco to have a 8.4" and the TrueTrac would work. However, after speaking with them it seems that the 7.5 and 8.4 aren't easily distinguished and some 2005 could actually come with the 7.5.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or insights into this. Thanks for your help!

    Jon

All 2005's have 8.0" differentials, however, some people (erroneously) refer to some as 8.0" or 8.4". There are no 2005's with a 7.5" diff.

But, to answer your question, you have what people sometimes refer to as an 8.4" diff. The 2005-2015 with a locking diff is the older design that is referred to as an 8.0" (although, again, both are actually 8.0" ring gears).

Question, I had an 00 tundra with an 8.4inch differential for sure. It tells me that when i put my vin on the toyota website. I put and eaton e locker in it, but totaled the truck the other day. Now i have an 05 tacoma 4wd, with and lsd. Can I use the locker from my tundra in my tacoma? When i look up what locker my new tacoma takes it matches the part number for the locker i put in my tundra. but it also says the tacoma i have has an 8.4inch diff on the site

The Tundra uses the same 8.0" rear diff as the 2005-2015 Tacoma.

Sweet thank you! Just curious if you know why toyota labels my tundra as an 8.4inch?

To be honest, I don't know where the '8.4"' came from. Everything I've got from Toyota back to the 90's refers to them as 8.0".

Holy shit I'm confused!! Bump this thread for any new info, specifically for 3rd gens.

I've run into a SNAFU and need to source a 4.30 front diff but all the info I'm finding is conflicting (including VIN searches at Toyota.com/owners for specs) and the junkyards (namely LKQ) are not helping with their mislabeled offerings. Been trying to stick to searching for V6 MT trucks but apparently not all of them have 4.30 ratio diffs like I thought. If I've got a door jam sticker, is there a way to tell which final ratio it has? If it's got an 06 in it, is there a any question if it's 4.30?

    Please help me out!

It is true. I have 3 gen with 2 gen axles (3.73).
You probably need to have the donor's vin sticker to be sure. Otherwise, count number of rotations

That's a new one to me! Didn't realize any 3rd gens came with 3.73 gearing. What's your door jam sticker say for the code? Have you verified by turning the tires/driveshaft test?

As for me, it doesn't help my understanding that LC Engineering's door jam sticker chart appears wrong (Differential Information) and different from the one in @Jeff Lange 's original post here. His chart seems like the most accurate one so far but he did mention discrepancies so I'm wondering if there are any new insights.

So far, please tell me if I'm wrong but if it's a manual transmission 3rd gen Tacoma with *06* code in the door jam sticker, there's a pretty good chance the truck has 4.30 gearing right? Turns out I purchased a mislabeled 4.30 front diff from LKQ and I need to either swap it for a 4.30 front diff they have in stock somewhere or get my money back. It seems like most, if not all, the 3rd gen diffs they have are mislabeled but at least they're pretty good about cataloging the door jam sticker from the donor truck.

EDIT: Looking into it more it appears 2020+ Mexico-built Tacomas have a change in the axle coding. The door jam stickers I see there on manual transmission trucks have *07* instead of *06*, but the Texas/USA built trucks still have *06*. Hmmm?

Example: 2021 model year, built 9/20 in Mexico, RC62f manual tranny TRD Sport and A07A axle code.
