I bought a 2005 4.0 with 99,000 miles, one owner from a dealership in January. I drive a lot, with about 14,000 added since then. Doing some research, ive seen that some people with this model year and engine have had issues with head gaskets.

What exactly is the issue? And is it inevitable, or just driving habit and lack of maintenance?

What is the typical signs and symptoms of issues with this and the cost to repair?

    Any advice is great!
    Thanks

If you look around enough you can find examples of all kinds of problems with any type of vehicle. If yours isn't using coolant or blowing smoke I wouldn't be concerned with it at all. I would suggest changing the coolant though. If it's never been done it's overdue. I have heard of issues on other Toyota's with not using Toyota coolant also.

From what I have read, there is a big difference in coolant used in American manufactured vehicles compared to Asian vehicles. It all has to do with the internal engine parts and how the coolant reacts. I use OEM coolant in my Tacoma and my civic. I'm guessing that some or most of these gasket issues are caused by people who dump whatever coolant they find at there local parts stores.
