I took a 4.0 motor out of a 2003 2x4 4Runner and put it in a 2005 4x4. I starts and runs great but it has a P0340 code showing. I used the harness from the 2005. I did have to change the cam position sensors from the 2005 motor to the 2003. The front 02 sensors were different on the 2003 motors also. I put a different cam sensor in it a tried to reset it but the code came back. I try the reset where you run it to 45-55 mph for 2 minutes then slow down and stop. The code went away for a few minutes but then came back. The motor has 109000 miles on it.

Likely a stretched timing chain, higher mileage Tacomas are known for this.

2005 was the first year of the 4.0 1GR with chain.

Would 109000 miles be considered higher miles for the chain in the 4.0?

No they are both 4.0. The 2003 motor was from a 4Runner. It had 2 wire cam sensors. That is why I had to change them from the original motor. I still can’t figure out what is causing the P340 code. It runs great. Does anyone know what pins in the computer harness go to the 3 pins for the cam sensor? The harness appears to be in good shape but I thought I could check continuity from pin to pin.

I looked up the cam actuator sprockets for both engines, it looks like they have different reluctor wheels. You would have to pull the valve covers to verify but if thats the case thats the likely cause of your p0340.

Thanks I will compare the two when I get time to tear into the old motor. I did clear the code today. I let it run for 10 minutes and it didn’t come back. I am going to try again tomorrow. Thanks again for the help
