Cool. Cross your fingers! lol I was kinda thinking it's more likely you will have to adjust pinion depth due to no carrier being exactly the same... but like you said, you'll find out quickly enough. And yeah, a previous, incorrect install is a definite possibility..

    Looking foward to it, man...

New/old carrier won't matter. The ring gear is the same, and will still be mounted concentric to the carrier bearing seats within the housing. The carrier would still be located the same distance from the pinion.

We may be talking about two different things though. Pinion depth refers to where the contact is made between the heel and the toe on the ring gear.

The carrier bearing shims will determine the depth the contact is between the face and the flank of the ring gear tooth. Two seperate adjustments.

The wear pattern on the gears I took out doesnt look promising for not having to adjust the pinion depth but I can be optomistic right? It looks closer to the heel to be honest. Supposedly the gears were set-up by a professional...at least thats what the hilljack I got it from on CL said...

    Terminology reference for clarification:

Daw, mudafudgah, you're right. I know what pinion depth is... it's just too early in the morning! :p lol Not sure what I was thinking...

And bummer... does it look like it's favoring heel on coast or drive? If it's slightly favoring heel on coast and then conversely, slightly favoring toe on drive, I probably wouldn't worry about it.... that is, if the pattern also looks good root to face.(centered or maybe slightly deep, to counter high torque produced deflection) From what I've read, and from my installs, it seems like you want to look more at where the pattern lies betwen the root and face of the teeth to see if the pinion depth needs adjusting. And then when the pinion depth looks good, where it falls between toe and heel is mostly due to the guality of the gears, or maybe backlash needs minor adjustment... :notsure:

Do you know if the "professional" gear installer put a solid collar on the pinion?

To be honest, I dont even remember which face I was looking at. I just noticed heel favoring.

And its a Ford 60 best I can tell, so probably just has pinion shims not a collar or crush sleeve. Unfortunately, it was so pitted and with the POR15 the PO put on it the BOM is gone forever.

Great link man, i've always had a hard time understanding ring and pinion gears, so ill have to stash that away for future references. :spy:

Haha...building the axles right now is really all I can do since I am away from my garage right now because of the divorce...but...this thing will be as low as I can keep it. Nothing is off limits as far as frame notching oil pain clearanceing (not really necessary with 2nd gen, but if I can gain anything I will).

A little update here as well...my 35 spline shafts arrived. Ordered on Wednesday from India and they arrived on Tuesday the next week. Thats faster than some vendors here ship, lol.

These things are beef. I knew they would be larger, but this is almost rediculous. Checked fit with my newly bored spindles and the ARB I acquired and all is well.

Stock 30 spline and new 35 spline chromo's:

Need to cut to length before install...no biggee. :D

Thats funny... I ordered two separate things from vendors over in china the last few weeks. They showed up faster than things get shipped from vendors here. No wonder they are getting our jobs, they actually give a shit

Well got the rear end set-up yesterday. Got the RD-35 ARB installed, along with the 4.56's I was re-using from Trac-Loc the axle came with.

Then rigged up some fittings to test the locker and perform a leak down test before I button this up:

And at lunchtime on saturday the postman brought me my Ballistic Diff cover as well so I shot it with 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint :D

Dude! Very nice. That carrier is beefy! So is that diff cover. :D Any pictures of the pattern? What's your total (carrier & pinion bearings) pre-load?

I'll run a pattern hopefully this evening. Basically I am counting on the gears being set-up correctly previously so I only set backlash because of swapping the carriers. Was still a bitch to do.

The more I touch this axle the more I appreciate the Japanese engineering that went into Toyotas design. Not that I didnt appreciate it before, I just do so even more now, lol.

The front axle will be getting a full install using new gears and a master install kit as well, probably a week or two out from putting this one in the storage unit and bringing the front axle back to finish it's set-up.

Yeah it was a bitch to get the .008" since I was re-using old shims from the LSD and what came on the ARB that I bought used, so my options for shim stacks were limited, but I always make it work.

Lets see how this SAS ends up before I answer that question, lol. But...I love you too man, no homo :D
