I can’t speak for the 2nd gen 5 spds but the 3rd gen 5 spds don’t have a magnetic drain plug. As I pass 110k on the truck I’m concerned about the longevity of it and where I’ll be down the road. Sure I do all the maintenance but come the day I need to rebuild the transmission I’m not sure a rebuild kit will be available for a transmission used in two years where as rebuild kits for the older r155 can be found. Admittedly seeing all the metal in the oil come out every oil change bothers me and based off what I’ve read magnets make a reasonable difference worth investing in. I know the differentials have magnetic drain plugs but Toyota decided not to put one on the transmission:confused:

I did some digging online and found a company called goldplug that makes magnetic drain plugs. They don’t have any listings for the 3rd gens so I took a gamble and ordered ones for a 2nd gen. Needless to say I’m happy to say they fit the newer trucks just fine. A little pricey but I thought it’s worth it and thought I’d share it with you guys. I didn’t take pictures of the install or anything as it’s pretty self explanatory.

Changing over during a service would probably be ideal, I personally did it in the morning after the truck sat overnight in 30 degree weather where the oil is nice and thick. I was ready to get dirty and had the new drain plug ready and I did a quick swap and I lost maybe 1 shot worth of fluid. It’s worth noting the factory bolts are 24mm whereas these are 1”.

Anyways, the part number was AP-05, here is a pic, and they do come aluminum washers. I wasn’t clear about that so I ordered a set of 5 which I didn’t need to.

Good timing I stumbled on this. I’ve been meaning to swap out the mt90. They’re out of stock on this unit. Did you have to special order?

If an after market 2nd gen plug fits (as I expect it to given it's still same manufacturer just a different revision of a design) then you can run the low profile internal hex lexus magnetic drain plugs too.

I got them from the dealer and replaced all 7 of my plugs with 90341-18021.

    Think I paid about $7 a piece?

No, they were in stock when I ordered them. Maybe I got the last two?

i know they’re available on Amazon amongst other sites too. I just ordered directly from the manufacturer to give them my money instead of a middleman

It wasn’t cheap but I figured it’s a small price to pay to keep the engine running well

I like the Gold Plug, but it being stainless steel gives me pause: Wouldn't it promote galvanic activity between it and the housing, causing it to possibly gall-up and be impossible to remove? Does anyone know of an alternative that is not stainless?

I thought about this myself actually. I personally replace my trans fluid every 30k so I decided not to worry about it since the threads will be getting oiled up on a regular basis. You can get the Lexus OEM one someone posted the part number for on here

I'll get Nathan's if he ever gets them back in stock. I like the height of the plug head. Lots of torque bearing surface to wranch on.

It might. Just as likely, it might not. Theads on dissimilar metals will always trade ions. Anti-seize in this situation is only a stop-gap measure. Mainly, when non-stainless options are available to use, I am going to use them. Why create unnecessary internal drama every time you think about it, causing worry about whether those plugs are going to break loose next time you go to change oil? I have enough opportunity for trepidation in my life already. Why add another? Buy the non-stainless magnetic plugs, install them and happily move on with your life.

I was just throwing that out there haha I’m more of a DONT worry about anything type of guy. It seems that the less I think/worry about part failures etc. the less parts fail or have issues. Works for me anyways but I’m plagued with my fathers bad luck. So I don’t worry about a thing until I know something needs addressed ASAP.

Understood. I wish I could be more that way, but I get paid to worry. I assess and transfer potential risk for a living. It is my job to recognize risk before it happens, and help make sure it doesn't. Slowly, you end up seeing everything through Chicken Little's eyes!

I get it beleive me! My ol lady is the same way. I used to worry about every little thing myself but over the years I’ve realized that it just isn’t worth it, it seems that as soon as I start to worry about something I have an issue with that something. Just last week I thought hmm I should probably get to that passenger side upper ball joint, and boom the next day it started pulling a bit to the right and feeling loose on the passenger side. I got it in today Haha but I swear my father and I are cursed. What do you do for a living?

    Risk management.

Fill, or drain? Front diff? Trans case? Rear diff? Then define and discuss, therein comparing and contrasting, the Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian theories of democracy. And do not paraphrase.

Just curious - is one magnet more powerful then another ? How would you know ? Thanks for any reply.
