This is a nice idea in theory, but here is my problem with Toyota. Ive looked at other domestic trucks in my area from the same years(05-06) and they don't have nearly the amount of rust on the frame that the Tacoma does.
The frame should not rot out like this in such a short time. The weird thing is Toyota appeared to do a good job of addressing the rest of the vehicle. They just neglect the frame.

    Good luck op !

I was also reading the other day on ttora . That a lot of 05 guys are seeing the welds on the motor mounts rust out and the motor mount break off . Just another thing for people to look out for when your under your truck .

There are no 2nd gen frames in the US ?

Like , uh , in the plant where they make Tacomas ?

Is the frame different now than the '05's ?

we are all being nice for now.

we traded in 2 vehicles and paid cash for the difference. we own this taco outright.

your comments above are generally our position.

I believe the terms of contract are that mediation needs to be handled via the local BBB. Not sure if / how that would shake out here -- hence we are making contact with a lawyer so we are correctly advised of our rights & positions.

I agree .... I think they can change the metal properties to help the situation. I'm no chemist though. these frames are not as thick as I think they could be. My dodge sits here as a lot truck with a rotted frame and it is thicker.

Believe me they are taking stock of all this because the reps have been in my area looking and taking pics and writing reports. Thats all I know..

I found that strange too. But according to wikipedia:

The second generation Tacomas were assembled in Tijuana, Mexico and Fremont, California while the plastic/composite beds were all built in Mexico.

Assembled would imply that components were shipped in. No?

WP also says: in August 2009 Toyota announced that it would relocate Tacoma production from Fremont to San Antonio, Texas, consolidating it with its Toyota Tundra production line and thus having all American-made Toyota pickups manufactured at one facility.

this is a valid point. I apologize if anyone was put off or hurt by this. I've lost 3 close friends to cancer and am not making light of it.

I don't think I have rights to modify a thread title do I?

is there a mod in the house?

I had a 13 year old ford ranger that lived outside the entire time in this state. it had no rust issues. none.

the steel mix and manufacturer are going to be the source point of this situation, as it was with Dana and the 1st gen corrosion.

the availability of in-country frames isn't really the issue right now, anyway.

Just found this post in another thread.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...frame-rusted-through-club-19.html#post4393738

I've been rustproofing my Tacoma twice a year since I bought it, and each spring put it on a lift to grind / blast away rust and repaint the frame. The frame itself looks great, but the caved in motor mount on the frame rail looks terrible.

My frame collapsed on Aug 30, 2011. Toyota owned up to the problem with a complete frame replacement. Today is January 20, 2012 and my truck will be ready this morning with a brand new frame, hopefully not accompanied by brand new problems.

So I did a little digging on part numbers, just because I was curious and came across some interesting information...

There are more than one set of frame part numbers, depending on date of manufacture. I only did this check for a V6 AT AccessCab, but take a look at this.

    51001-04480 Frame 2004.09 - 2005.08
    51001-04480 Frame 2005.08 - 2008.08
    51001-04690 Frame 2008.09 - Present (Replaced by 51001-04691)

Now, Toyota released the first round of press releases for the first generation trucks (95.5-00) in March of 2008.

I find it interesting that timing-wise, the frame change happens to correlate with the release of the first round of recalls.

Does anyone know if something else was changed on the frame unrelated to the undercoating? I am curious to see what any of the mid-late 2009 models are like frame-wise as the ones I am reading about people complaining about are the 2005-2007 models.

Anyone happen to have any better information than I do?
