I have a 2005 Tacoma Prerunner 2wd with 194k. It's currently in the shop with a leaking HG. HG is definitely being done but wondering what else I should/ought to do.

My son works at a shop and got me a cut rate on labor. At the moment were are looking at the HG replacement, having the machine shop do what needs to be done with the heads and dealing with all fluids and replacing a leaking transmission output seal. That puts me at a little over $3000.

What I am trying to decide upon...

    Internals
    Timing Chain/Guides/Tensioner
    Valve Job

    Suspension
    Replacing front struts
    Tie rod leak

    Drivetrain
    U joints
replacing diff with an Eaton TrueTrac

I also need to deal with some paint issues, particularly on the roof.

If I add everything in I am adding another $4,000 to the cost ($2k is the true trac). It feels like the internals ought to be done since I'll never open up the engine again to deal with them. And I guess my primary question is in that regard. If you are doing a HG on a Taco, what else should you do on a vehicle with almost 200k.

    Thanks in advance.

In terms of the timing chain, guides and tensioner and with the opportunity to do a valve job, i.e. all the internals to the engine while the head is off the block. Are those items you would do?

The water pump & belt were replaced a few years ago

If you have the money AND the time AND you’re getting a great rate on labor AND, like you said, you don’t want to open up the engine again AND you want to keep the truck as long as possible then yeah absolutely. Have them pull the engine while they’re at it, replacing seals/gaskets and checking tolerances along the way. You will have made 1million miles much easier.
