    Hi Everyone.

I have a 2005 2.7L 4C 5 speed Standard Taco (as base as the truck gets) with 112,000 miles on it. The problem started about 4 years ago in extreme weather 100+ Degrees out. The truck wouldn't start, turn or even click on my first attempt to start it. It would take about 3 to 5 tries to get it started (meanwhile all the electrical worked fine.. Lights, gauges, radio etc..). The problem got worse and worse over time. It started doing it at 90 degrees, then 85 and now even when it is just 75 degrees out side!. About a year ago I found the trick of unplugging the MAF sensor when it did this and that would get it to start (I would plug the sensor back in after starting). The trick stopped working and its now been twice that I've had to leave my truck in a parking lot and come back at night to take it home. After reading a few forums I replaced the MAF sensor and the 2nd o2 sensor. It seemed to do the trick until yesterday when it was 80 degrees outside and the problem happened again. I feel like this is common in 96 and 05 tacos (from what i read). Has anyone had this happen and been able to fix it on their own? I would love to hear what you did and maybe what I should try next.

The truck starts great in the, morning, evening and all winter, but I'm really looking forward to fixing this problem since I live in California where our winter is about a month long. I'm not a pro mechanic but look forward to the challenge of fixing this on my own

Thanks in advance for the help. I'm open to questions if it will help us solve this problem

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if you are correcting my grammar or asking about the temp outside. Hot weather vs warm weather or weather vs wheather. I guess it depends what part of the country you are from..

About the outside temp. It first started doing it only when it was 100+ degrees out but now it even does it at 75 degrees. Thanks for the help

This cries out for a (a) battery check; (b) battery connectors check; (c) battery cables check; (d) ground connection from battery to frame to engine block.

There are other possibilities, but to me they get remoter in probability. For example, I don't know exactly how your specific starter works, but heat can cause a solenoid bind, which means no voltage to starter until it pops free...

Possibly barometric pressure sensor. I think it is incorporated in the MAF sensor but im not sure, further research required on that lol

Is that a real thing? As in if the MAF is reading incorrectly it won't allow the engine to fire?

Yes sir, if something, meaning anything incorporated with the maf is to go wrong, it will more than likely cause a crank no start condition

I had the same problem with my 96 Tacoma. For many years it wouldn't start in hot weather above 80 and higher. I tried everything, maf relay, (which works but dash light stays on and smog people won't tell you at registration time!). Opening gas tank worked sometimes. The real problem turned out to be the spark plug wires from autozone for $40.00 (lifetime guarantee). On a whim I tried the premium silicone wires that they sell for $79.99 and traded in my lifetime guaranteed $40.00 ones at the same time. When hot weather came around it never happened again. It is such a major relief to see that issue in the rear view mirror..I'm in Las Vegas goin on 400K miles and no rust on my 96 Tacoma.

I second the battery, connectors, cables, ground, and cables to starter opinion. I’ve had a corroded connection cause me to get sufficient voltage to run all the gauges and the fan, but not enough amps to even in interest the starter in trying. Cleaned them up and the truck started right up. I eventually ended up replacing them.

^^^ When I replied it was on the first page, and anyone who reads it in the future might find the info helpful. Bumping an old thread is not the end of the world. We all know that you can read and interpret dates though.

Given that he only had 2 posts and both are in this thread my guess is either he figured it out, and/or no longer has the truck anymore.

‘‘Twas said in jest, but...it does help when folks come back to their thread to tell the tale of what the diagnosis or fix was in the end.

I completely agree with you. However I have seen in lots of threads where someone will sign up to be a memeber because they have some type of problem and then poof, they vanish. Some people just jump the gun. Later figuring out the problem or taking it to someone that can. Problem gets fixed and they can careless about ever logging back in and giving any type of update or asking any more questions or whatever. Nature of the beast I suppose.

People are just lazy and self absorbed.
Other people tried to help them out with their problem but they can't even spend a few minutes to update those that did with what the solution was.
