Looking to replace my tattered 08 leather steering wheel.

Any real world experianced swaps. I love my 06 sienna limited wood/leather. Avalon etc...

I wonder how the steering wheel splines, swifches, clock spring and air bag would interact?

Did the 12' components swapped straight over to your 10'?

What SW controls did the 10' start with and what functions did the 12' end up with?

    Any SRS issues?

    Clockspring?

Yeah the 12 conversion looks real good

I did not, but since mine is a 2010 I did have to use the earlier 2012 controls to get all the buttons to work with the new headunit. you might get away with it on your 11 tho.

same basic functions, I mostly just use the volume control, the skip to next track sometimes works, but thats more the fault of the aftermarket head unit than the buttons.

    never had any airbag issues.

I replaced the clockspring with the wheel but in retrospect I should have kept the old one, since the replacement one wont honk the horn anymore lately so ive had to get a new one to replace that again im just waiting for nicer weather to fix it since its a minor issue. the audio controls are a separate thing that clips onto the clockspring if I recall correctly, its been 8 years since I did that.

everything was a straight 1:1 swap. there is only 1 bolt holding the wheel on, all the connectors were the same, didnt rewire anything.

    thx!

Lexus gx470 03-07 should be direct swap and same controls, 08-09 probably but not 100%

So even with the Lexus clockspring I would imagine there would be alot involved for the phone

Not sure on the clock spring, there's been a couple that did the swap on here and TN so I'd check and see if any did a thread. There's 4 models that used that wheel at least, just the lexus 1 had wood trim

O.K., so I've found the 03 - 09 LX & GX 470 seem to be a quick wood grain upgrade to stock o.e.m. look and function

So mean while I think I'll just cover it with this. I'd prefer keeping it era/style correct as I'm attempting to keep the Xrunner feel
    s-l225-1.jpgs-l225.jpg

I really like the 2012 but I have yet to find solid input on much of the basic conversion questions. For example the years range. Some say 2012 thru 2015, some list 2020 or 21. They have phone on the right. Most likely alot of conversion issues.???
    s-l225-2.jpg

I love my 06 Sienna Limited woodgrain (has JBL/phone) it makes me wonder if its a swap over example and how universal other Toyota/Lexus of the era are? That also has phone on the right so it could be a period correct way to achive both woodgrain and phone. Question is did 08 Tacoma have o.e. phone? JBL option maybe?
    f.jpg

Ebay also shows a Lexus LS and GS 470 to be a strong conversion using Tacoma support parts like clockspring. Covers and air bag(?).I like the grey/woodgrain. Anyone notice any obvious issues with below Lexus 470?

Not sure if it will be an "issue" but isn't your cruise control on a post as is the 12-15?

I dont see how that could be problematic??

The more I look at the base stripped down steering wheel itself (frame and outer leather/woodgrain grip), it seems standardized throughout most models of the time period. it seems the 2005 thru 2011(?) Tacoma has spacific combinations as does the 2005 thru 2010 Avalon, 4 runner, certain Lexus models, ect...
There can be a few differances in control switches and I wonder if there may be different depths or other issues.

When observing cost I notice some models have nice features but are cheaper/ more ecpensive... depending on model. It must be like selling a relabled VW part as a Porsche part. $$$.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, what do you mean exactly by earlier controls. Did this newer style wheel have expanded operation controls on later years? .Did you have any kind of function from the right side voice comand/phone controls?

There seem to be other steering wheel threads, but I'm all for more people trying it out.

My 2014 steering wheel has started to show its age, and I'd rather replace it than put a cover on it.

I prefer the textured synthetic over the wood... I think... who knows what I'll end up with!

when the interior and wheel were updated in 2012 a more basic set of wheel controls was put in, later they changed to diamond shaped buttons and more buttons were added lower down.

I dont take phone calls when I drive so I never use those, but as I recall the pioneer head unit didnt recognize it anyway. newer head units might work better and be more compatible perhaps.

If you look HERE on NRG's website as an example you will see a list of vehicles that their aftermarket hub is compatible with. This would also mean that any of these steering wheels would fit 2nd gen Tacomas...whether or not the clock spring is compatible I would doubt it but it shouldn't be too tricky to figure out.

    Car Hub Compatibility:
All : Scion XA | XB | XD | Tc
    2012+: Scion FR-S
    2012+: Subaru BR-Z
    '01-'17: Toyota Camry | Corolla
    2005+: Toyota Tacoma
    2006+: Toyota FJ Cruiser
    All : Toyota Matrix
    2006+: Toyota FJ Cruiser
    '00-'04: Toyota Avalon
    2000+: Toyota Tundra
    2005+: Lexus GS

I may have to try the spare xD steering wheel I have sitting around. If nothing else I think it's a bit smaller diameter so I can stop squeezing my hand between the wheel and my thigh.
