Have an 07 2.7l manual with 300,000 kms. Symptoms are -

Low power (feels like vvt isnt kicking in)
    No codes

Loud rattling noise from the timing cover when in 3rd and 4th and letting off the gas. Soon as throttle is given noise is gone. I can make it do the same noise by using a scanner and turning the vvt solenoid on and reving it up.

Converters are fine, Doesnt sound like pinging, and def doesnt sound like the normal tacoma noises. It sounds like the ford 5.4l when the timing phaser has failed.

How prone are these to failing? With there being no codes it wouldnt be the solenoid?(guessing)

i might be in a similar boat. I have loud rattling at some start ups that persists for like a split second. I also have a metallic tick at high rpms. For me, the timing chain and tensioner are out of the question as they have been replaced. That could be the case for you, maybe even the gears too. Still trying to figure mine. It’s been happening for like a year and I only have 145k miles
