I was hoping to get some advice from around here on a topic Ive seen posted about before.

I found a clean 2006 Tacoma TRD off-road with 160k miles and meticulous service history. However, after doing some research, it seems that 05 and 06 models are prone to head gasket issues. I read online that ones built after 11/05 have a new head gasket design that seemed to fix the problem. The 1gre-fe I am looking at has a manufacture date of 10/05….

Is it worth passing up all together? Should I pick up the rig w the shell, perfect paint, elocker, tow package and fix it if I do have a problem down the line? All thoughts appreciated!

Where are you located? Very important you have someone check the frame if it is from a salt-infested winter wonderland. With a detailed service history I'd be more worried about rust.

    He’s looking to get 17,000.
Just had a rack, serpentine belt, clutch, and a general tune up (plugs, fluids). No signs of hg problems now. Also comes with a matching shell and the rare 6 speed.
I guess I’m wondering if it’s worth the potential headache down the road. Hell…I’m hoping it’s overblown online and not gonna be an issue all. Maybe it 06 models all have the redesigned head gasket?

It’s a west coast truck. Hasn’t seen salt in its life (hopefully). The frame looks solid, only surface but no flaking

I'd say nab it, my 06 has 165k and no problems yet.

If its half as good to you as my 06 has been to me, I'd say go for it.

    17,000 sounds too expensive for a 2005

True the v6 with 6mt is hard to find. It took me several months. If you think about it too long it’ll be sold.

My '06 PreRunner is closing in on 150K with no head gasket issues. I plan on driving it another 150K or more and if any issues pop up I will be on this forum getting whatever it is sorted out. Good luck.
