My truck got rear-ended by a CRV. Not a huge amount of damage (although the CRV was messed up pretty bad). It got the right side of the bumper, the tailgate was dented, the rear light was shattered, and the right rear panel was flexed enough that it cracked the paint. There might be a dent where the light assembly was shoved into the panel.

I just received the estimate from GEICO and it seems really low ($2000 parts and labor). The only parts being replaced are the bumper and light ($574.25)

I don't have much experience working with insurance companies on repairs. Any advice would be appreciated.

FYI -- this is what the Honda looked like. No one injured thankfully. [IMG]

Not sure what state you are but seems very low. Do you have to possibility to bring it to a shop for an estimate?
Be careful about any other damage you cannot see yet. How is your bed alignment? (look at the junction space with the cabin on both sides especially with the fact your panel flexed).

I will personally will go with a trustable shop, get an estimate and get back to the insurance with it.

    Seems low to me too.
If the paint is cracked on the rear fender. It will need painted.
I am not a PDR guy, but maybe they are going to try a PDR on the tailgate?

Also, the right rear fender flare looks “tweaked”.

I think the adjuster might have missed a few things?

I had a bit less damage and got $2800 in 2020 when it happened to me. I had the guy's insurance company tell me to take it to a Caliber Collision. They confirmed that there was no frame damage. There was damage under the fender flare that wasn't visible thou. I had the guys insurance just pay me out. I got a bumper/hitch combo for $100 up here on the market place. I had to re-paint it black and I had to drive an hour to pick it up. My bumper was pretty rusted. I wouldn't have been able to get the bolts out if not for the frame swap that was done on my truck. Good Luck!

Is there an opportunity to make improvements to my truck? I've wanted to replace the rear lights with LED's but I suspect that the insurance company will only restore it to pre-crash condition.

Yes and Yes. Both are true. BUT....you could do the work yourself and get the payout paid to you instead of the repair shop. In this case you could buy upgraded components. It may cost more than what the insurance company is gonna give you so you'd have to cover the difference, but sure beats getting the truck back to pre crash and then spending out of pocket to upgrade. I hope that makes sense. Good Luck!

Truck is drivable? Take it to three independent collision shops and get estimates. That'll let you know if $2200 is low or par for the course using aftermarket parts.

You can take the cash and fix it yourself with an off-road bumper, LED tail lights, etc. But you'll still need a collision shop to dress and repaint the tailgate and portions of the bedside.

Yeah they missed a few things as said above by @TnShooter.
I had my wives hood and roof painted due to clear coat failure and it cost me 3K with no body work.

That's an easy $5,000 repair, just too fix the tailgate will be $2,500 plus.

Just got quoted 6k for the exact same damage as yours on the same side from caliber. Other car was totaled. Replace bumper, tailgate, light, rear quarter panel. Insurance initial estimates suck, they initially quoted 3k for me.

my tacoma rear-ender was $2600 and similar to your damage... the repair was thru Auburn Collision Center adjacent to and under ownership by the Auburn Toyota dealership (California)... i looked at the body damage estimate paperwork... and they called out using an aftermarket replacement bumper... not happy... so a new factory bumper was sourced ... that's a nissan sentra...

I'm finally getting my truck fixed. Was out of the country for 3 months. The shop submitted an estimate for repairs that was double what Geico estimated. But... Geico says that they must use recycled and/or aftermarket parts. They require the shop to get a used taillight and aftermarket bumper. This doesn't seem right. I guess I understand the used taillight, but this truck (2006) only has 42,000 miles and has never been damaged. I think I'm getting screwed by Geico.

Dude i crashed my 2019 and Geico would only pay for aftermarket parts. It was for the front bumper and the aftermarket part did not fit quite perfectly.(basically had gaps between bumper and fenders and fog bezels had gaps)

I sent them pics, they sent out a dude to see the poor fit. Then they told me I would need a shop to remove the panels to show that it wasnt poor fit due to internal damage, then they would agree to replace with OE

i lived with it until i bought a steel bumper

i’d say reallly try to fight them on getting aftermarket. Or maybe the shop will find more internal damage, charge more to geico, and you can order OE

Unfortunately that’s how insurance works, you pay out the ass only to get cheap replacement parts. Usually body shops will send the estimate to the Oem supplier and they will have the opportunity to price match and supply Oem parts to the aftermarket price. I do this daily as I manage a parts department at a GM dealer.

I hit a piece of metal that flew off a truck on the highway and ended up needing a new fascia and work to the passenger rocker. I have start farm and naturally the wrote it for aftermarket, the shop I used was able to get the local Toyota dealer to price match me a new oem cover.
