I have a 2006 TRD Sport 2WD DoubleCab that has started making a pretty bad squeaking noise when I backup. I'm about to take it in to the dealership service department to have it diagnosed. Anyone had this type of issue? It doesn' sound like it the brakes, the squeak rpm is much faster than the wheel is turning which has me believing it is driven by th drive shaft since it's rpm is higher then the wheels, it could be the rear end or I'm not sure if there is a bearing or some sort on the drive shaft, a CV joint or something like that, that could be going bad. Any ideas? I have just over 100,000 miles on her. Thanks for any input, I did some searching and found where others have asked questions similar but I didn't see any resolutions to the problem.

Just had it diagnosed as the Universal Joint is bad. 1 dealership said they would want to replace the entire drive shaft and it was $680 another dealership said they would do the U Joint only, the first dealership said they found that just replacing just the U Joint has caused vibrations because the U joint starts to waller out the drive shaft after a while and the only fix is to replace the entire drive shaft. Anyone have any experience in this? I have the long bed, I wonder if that has anything to do with this since the drive shaft is longer than normal.

As long as the bearing caps in the universal have not broken loose and started moving then there is no reason why you couldn't just replace the universal joints.

I'm having just the U Joint replaced, they are going charge $325 to do the work, sounds kind of high to me, but I can't get the time off work to do it myself and wouldn't know where to start anyway.

U Joint replaced and all sounds good now. At 102,000 miles that was the first thing to go out on this truck, well, besides the compass/temp gauge which I fixed once already with re-soldering.

Are you sure it's the same one gone? There are three on your prerunner. Could also be that the new one is greaseable and has not been greased? Also, $325 installed for a u - joint is ridiculous, go to an independent driveline shop that deals in genuine Spicer parts, you should be able to have all three replaced for less than that, labour included.

I found an independent driveline shop as landphil suggested, they found it was the front u-joint and not the rear one. They are only charging me $82 to replace it. Thanks so much for the advice. I think I'm done going to a Toyota shop for any work.
