200k miles. Had the head gasket done (valves, timing chain, radiator etc.). Apparently Toyota incorporated the oil pump into the timing chain cover, so you have to replace the cover AND the pump. Toyota wants $800. The shop found it on Amazon for $400, claiming it is the same quality as Toyota. When I searched Amazon, all I found was pumps for less that $100 (I wish!).
I called Toyota and verified that the cover is part of the pump, and that they wanted over $1000 retail.
Seems like a really bad design, probably done for the convenience of assembly. Correct?
The shop owner never mentioned replacing it, but the mechanic did. When I questioned the owner, he gave me the old "Well.... it depends how often the oil was changed, etc., etc.". Since he didn't have that information, it would have been nice if he mentioned it, when I brought the truck in!
With 200K on it, I couldn't see risking undoing half of what was just done if the pump went bad.

Was I smart to have it replaced?
Is there any good reason for incorporating the pump in the cover?
Can you find the whole assembly on Amazon?

What was wrong with the old oil pump?

It is built into the cover, but it can be worked separately unless the timing cover is actually damaged.

    Thanks!
I'm I'm wondering why both Toyota parts dept. and my mechanic, who is supposedly a "Toyota specialist", would say the cover had to be replaced with the pump. There was no damage to the cover. In fact, as I indicated, the shop originally wasn't planning to replace the pump. The mechanic mentioned it to me, saying he thought it was a good idea and I agreed.
Could it be that since the cover IS the pump housing, it's considered a wear item?
Does my VIN make any difference? The last 9 numbers that Toyota asked for are: 36Z200389.
The cover was already off, so the shop wasn't going to make any extra money replacing it.
By the way, if anyone's wondering, I did see the new cover installed, with the old cover on the bench

The housing for the pump is integrated into the timing chain housing.

Well I could see it with that many miles and I'm sure it cost a pretty penny or two to do the head gasket IF there had been sludge or oil pressure problems.

I just don't think an engine that has not had oil pressure / sludge / overheating issues needing to replace the oil pump and timing chain cover...
