Yes this 2006 Tacoma was running like a kitten, then the head gasket blew- things happen and 210k mile is not too bad. I understand the antifreeze is long life at this truck used the genuine Toyota antifreeze. May be a good idea to change more often than 100k miles.

Find a low mileage used from one of the newer 4Runners with dual VVT-i and gain an extra ~30 HP.

Penzoil recommends coolant change every 5 yrs or sooner. The buffers in the coolant that prevent corrosion become exhausted and the coolant turns corrosive.

HEY i have heads for that engine that are good, you would need to have them cleaned but i would sell em to you cheap, i want them out of my garage. dont bother with a whole new engine. These heads have 128k on them, already boxed and ready to ship.

Maybe im not sure what you mean, but you dont have to take the camshafts apart... just take the chain off and unbolt the c clips holding them in place and they lift right out. The job isnt exactly for the untrained, but also isnt terribly complex either. Just take your time putting everything back together cuz youll be pissed if you drive it 50 miles and you get a bad leak or something.....

Thanks for the input. Looks like I might still buy the truck. Something I just noticed on this sight is the Tacoma frames rust. I had crawled under this 2006 Tacoma and the frame looked good, no rust that I remember- but I was not looking for holes and did not pound with a hammer. Is rust something I should be concerned about? The truck lived in Florida and is now in Hawaii. Here in Hawaii the salt air along with constant high humidity can be a major corrosion issue.
    Thanks

Ok, I'll keep you in mind if the heads come off warped.
    Thanks

    Thanks,
I am some what good with mechanical repairs, but have had my share of screw ups to- live and learn. I might just have a shop change the head gasket as I don't want to screw it up and got a lot of other projects going on.

At $4K below KBB that seems like a fine deal. After that the question is what to do with it. I tend to think with the mystery imposed by the over temp condition combined with very high mileage you'd be best served with just replacing the engine.

If youre gonna get the truck for 4k, and youll spend around 3500 (thats the higher end IMO) on head gaskets at the shop, having that truck for 7500 is a steal. Even a 2WD. Ill sell you the heads for 300 plus whatever it costs to ship to HI, which could be a decent amount. Lots less than ebay or anywhere else and i obviously wouldnt have a core charge. Just keep it in mind man....

Say I spend $7,500 on this truck to buy and get on the road. How long could I expect her to run? Say maybe 300K? If so, can I expect the transmission to last that long, or should I expect any other major expenses?

Flush the transmission while you're at it if he hasn't done that already.

Ya thats tough to say for sure, depends on if they get everything sealed and torqued properly when they put her back together. I took the gamble on my truck's engine and tranny and am assuming theyll both last to 400K. Besides their known issues (like head gaskets), yota makes a very long lasting vehicle.
