I have a single cab 2.7 with 264,000 miles on it, starting to lose a lot of oil. I expect a little loss between changes, but it's getting worse. Adding about 2.5 quarts between changes. It's not smoking, there's always been a little wetness around the timing chain cover (front right) on the engine, and very little wetness under the engine. Valve covers aren't leaking either. Could it be burning it on the highway? I have a 120 mile commute 4 days a week.

I am going to check the rear seal area closely this evening, but besides those areas, I am stumped. Any advice? Also thought of maybe using 10W-40 or 20W-50 since it's got so many miles on it rather than the 5W-20 that it calls for.

doesn't have one, or, i've never been able to find it. Shouldn't it be mounted to the valve cover?

Yes, you do have one. Threaded into the passenger side of the valve cover in the rear towards the firewall.

Replace it and check that all of the hoses are clean and clear or just replace them also.

In the picture below it is labeled as ventilation valve sub-assembly.

Dealer item. I removed it, seemed ok. I cleaned it out and reinstalled.

My Corolla uses/loses about a quart every couple of thousand miles or so if I use synthetic.
I switched back to conventional and after a couple of changes, it stopped losing so much. Now, I have to add a quart about every 5,000 miles. I can live with that. My wife's van has about 169,000 miles on it an handles synthetic just fine.
    Just a thought.

If the above suggestions doesn't work, you can pull a spark plug out and if you find your spark plug is full of burnt things. That means your engine has serious internal problems like bad valve seals or worn piston rings and will cost a lot of money to fix that. You could try a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer to slow down the oil burning and could add more years to your engine.

Thanks. I'll check the PCV as per the video and then the plugs. I went to AutoZ and OReillys, neither of them listed it, told me it was dealer item. No worries, mine is prob fine. On a positive note, my truck runs great, even though I have this oil mystery.

Chief1959, did you ever come up with anything regarding your oil loss. I have a 2006 reg cab 2.7 with 260,000 on it and I’m having the same issue. No smoke, no oil on the ground. Losing about a quart every 2,000. I feel like maybe the timing cover is letting some out when the rpm’s are up on the interstate. Anybody think that could be a possibility? I’m sure some is getting past the valves but I feel like something else is a factor.

A qt every 2k would make a heck of a mess if it was all leak.

A compression and leakdown test will determine if it's rings, valve seals or a little of both. My vote will be valve seals.

If it's running well and compression is good, I'd just keep adding oil until it gets a lot worse than it is..

It runs great. I agree with you. Maybe I can get some pictures of the timing cover leak. It’s got a mess all the way to the bell housing.

Timing cover leak, and likely the front main seal. Just did the repairs on a friend's 2.7L. Had a hug mucky mess.

How much oil was he losing between changes? How many miles on his truck? Has he noticed a large or small decrease in oil consumption since the repairs?

200k+, and about a quart a week. No more abnormally large quantity of oil loss. He is upset that he has to buy oil filters now.....
