My Tacoma 6 speed has 155k on it. For over 100k miles it has been jumping out of reverse when backing. Hasn't gotten any worse I've just delt with it. I just rebuilt my stick as it needed a new bushing and I put in a short throw kit (which is awesome). I thought that might cure the problem but it didn't. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check your trans fluid level. When is the last time you changed it? If it has been doing it for 100k it seems unlikely, but worth checking off the list.

Throwout bearing bad, although it seems like after that long you would have ripped it out during other shifts too.

Check the motor mounts, could be causing alignment issues limiting the throw into R ?

You can add a 4x innovations trannny mount to help hold everything in place.

Throw out bearing would likely do the same in a forward gear, as all rotation at the bell housing is in the same direction whether or not it is in forward or reverse.

Yep, agreed although I wouldn't have waited 100k to find out... Maybe @wmstroud is just driving too fast in reverse?

This reminds me of when people do motor swaps and you have to notch the floor to get the full engagement to bell housing hence the suggestion that the tranny is moving. Bad mounts aren't uncommon in a lot of cars/trucks but typically ignored until they cause a bigger issue.

Yep, I've done that. But assuming stock with no body lift, that shouldn't be the case, unless the mounts are gone.

Does it ever grind when putting it in reverse? Some possible causes, linkages, worn shifter pivot, bad synchro.

Can't imagine the throw out bearing affecting any of the actual gears

Reverse does not have a syncro.
