Hi there, new to the forum. Can someone please help me figure this out.

    I have a 2007 Tacoma 4x4 automatic
the check engine light came on
the truck seemed to not shift into 5th / overdrive all of a sudden
    going 65 - 70 it stays at almost 3000 rpms in 4th
got codes checked and this is what it said:

    p0705
    code summary -

transmission range sensor circuit malfunction ( prndl input)

Can someone please help me figure this out,
It may be a park nuetral switch? but I am not sure...
Could it be fuse IG1 ? if so where do I find that?

Or could it be simply that I just disconnected my add on trailer wiring?

Thank you ...Please someone respond if you know anything

that code cleared, it is now reading knock sensor #2

a pack rat has possibly eaten something, possibly the wires
    to the sensor???

can i replace the sensor myself ? they say it takes like 10 hours
can't really afford the labor on that...

    thanks for reading my post...

you could buy a book, and the tools and get off cheaper than a tech at 10 hours i think. anything is possible, its just taking it apart and puting it back together. working on any car, especially these, is fairly easy. . . . unless you break something lol

To replace the knock sensor you have to take the top of the engine off. There is a thread in the past few months documenting how to do this. At the dealer it's very expensive.

First of all, THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING it has been very helpful. After doing a bit of research, I've found the wire colors (red and green and black and white) and located the harness that the wires are in. (behind the engine, close to the fire wall), The computer is looking for between 120 and 250 kila ohms (.00120-.00250) depending, i guess on outside temp.?

My plan is to trick the computer by interupting the wires, and installing the proper resistance. Currently the truck is in "safe mode" and it will not use 5th gear (auto). I figure if I have a knock I will here it, and there is probably something else wrong. (timing, firing order, etc.) For its life I will put good fuel in, that should help.

Anyone think this could work? Thanks everyone!

IT WORKED! ALTHOUGH I NO LONGER GET A READING FROM KNOCK SENSOR # 2. INSTALLED RESISTORS IN LINE AT .00250 K OHMS. IT CAME OUT OF "SAFE MODE" AND I HAVE 5TH GEAR AGAIN. WHEN I CAN AFFORD IT I WILL SPEND THE 500 TO GET THE WIRE FIXED THAT THE RAT CHEWED AND RESTORE MY SENSOR. THANK EVERYONE SO MUCH!

$500? Where can you get everything on top of the motor taken off and the wire harness replaced for $500 w/ labor? I'd like their number since the dealer charges thousands.

The good mechanic that I talked to said he just did an FJ with the same problem. It seems the wire runs in the rats path to the transmission so he just eats it out of th way. He said he would cap the coolant and not drain much, would remove plenom but not the head. He said there is enough room and slack on the wire to repair the wire since we think the sensor is still good. he said he did the FJ in 4 hrs and 2 plenom gaskets. 70 an hour and 40 for gaskets. plus oil change. 400 dollars. let me know if I can help further..

    Thanks everyone
