Hello all, I am having issues with my automatic transmission where there seems to be a delay in shifting sometimes. I will give you a few scenarios if anyone can shed some light on the issue.

Going from Park into Reverse, or Reverse into Drive, or Drive into Reverse: There is a significant delay where it feels like it will sit in neutral and after I rev up a little it jerks into gear.

Another scenario: I slammed on the brakes and then got back on the gas and it again went in a neutral state and then jerked hard into gear.

Also: Rolling stops. If I don't come to a complete stop it feels like it does the neutral thing again.

Truck Info: 2007 Tacoma 4.0l V6 TRD Off-Road 4x4. It was having these issues, I did an transmission oil change and didn't seem to make much of a difference. Now I am stumped.

Sounds like someone didn't follow Toyota's recommendation for maintenance, don't know what they say for your '07, 1st gens with the A340F are a drain & fill every 30-35k., not to be confused with a flush & fill which is what I think yours is if it's a sealed unit ( no visible dipstick for checking fluid )These have to be evacuated , including torque converter, but anyway you better start thinking about a trans & have a fat wallet...Went thru this with my 1st gen.

    Here is a couple possibilities.
    Low fluid level
    Torque converter going bad

    How many miles?

When last serviced before this recent change?

Was your change a drain and fill or flush and fill?

It has around 130k miles. I just bought it in August and it wouldn't surprise me if the previous didn't follow the recommended service schedule. I just did a drain and fill when I did the oil change. It is a closed system.

From reading these articles I am fairly certain it is the seals that are wearing out. I really doubt the previous owner ever did an oil change on the tranny.

Wow this is exactly what I needed. I am pretty sure is it a low fluid problem, considering the way I filled it myself. Also flipping toyota dealer gave me the WRONG fluid! Looks like I have an afternoon project. Thank guys!

UPDATE: So right fluid, and enough of it, fixed my issues. Shifts like a champ now. Thanks everyone for their input!

Hey guys! I have the same issues with the same year Taco. TRD. Check engine light is on, same funky jerky and inability to shift properly. I know it has a sealed transmission and as far as I can see, it isn't leaking. The last thing I want is to get ripped off by a dealer. Should I just reset the battery? Or is it time I faced the music and take it in?

If your having trans. issues you need to know that rebuilding yours is going to be around $3400+ if not maintenanced properly soon..

Take it to a trusted mechanic. I avoid dealers unless I have an issue that can only be fixed by them such as a computer problem. I just feel like they aren't worth the hassle and lies, but that's just me. Take it to whoever you think will give you the best answer.
I would also take it in ASAP. Don't mess with transmission issues.

If you want to save some time/money, check the fluid level first. That fixed all of my issues.

    I agree
I would like to hear why that check engine light is on . Considering you have a computer controlled transmission , Having a scan performed as well as checking the fluid levels as mentioned above would be a great place to start

I am having problems with my transmission now. Stopped at a red light yesterday, and when the light turned green my truck wouldn't go anywhere. Any suggestions

Take it to a trusted shop for a full fluid exchange with Toyota WS- or dealer if reasonable.
