So I recently purchased my first Tacoma (very excited), and some of the only time sensitive issues I found in the pre-purchase inspection is that the seals on both sides of the rear axle have been showing signs of a slow but steady gear oil leak.

I had the mechanic that was inspecting the vehicle to break down what would be required to service and correct the problem, and here is a list of his recommendations:
    • Replace both axle bearings as they are likely soaked in gear oil
    • Replace both seals
    • Add gear oil to the rear differential as it's likely quite low
    • Replace both brake shoes as they are soaked in gear oil
    • Possibly machine the drums and clean gear oil on both sides of the axle
In addition, some other issues (bigger/smaller) were pointed out, and it would be worth to get those sorted as well.
    • The drive shaft has considerable play (about 1 inch up/down/left/right), it looks like the center bearing unit needs to be replaced (vibration during harder acceleration)
    • Passenger Side Valve Cover has a very minor leak onto the exhaust, so a replacement is in order to correct (safety concern? It's a very very slow leak)
    • Transmission service as there is a bit of a hard shift between 1st and 2nd, very minor but I shouldn't be feeling hard shifts (or should I? Taco has 255k KM atm)
    • Seatbelt Warning Light burned out, replacement bulb needed
Now I've received a quote based on the completion of all the elements above from a couple of reputable and highly rated shops, and the consensus is that it would cost roughly $1800 to $2200 CDN (Canadian Dollars) +Tax to complete. Both parts and labor.

Does this look about right in regards to the cost of parts and labor required to get this sorted? Is there anything that I should pass up on for the time being that may not really be too important to dampen the cost a bit?

I really appreciate the feedback! Thanks everyone.

I believe you can replace the carrier bearings yourself and you would save some money there and I wouldn’t worry too much about the seatbelt lights unless Canada looks for that during inspection but all the other stuff I would get done just to make sure everything is done right and all the fluids are full to their proper levels
