Hey guys, looking to do an aftermarket stereo head unit install in my 2008 Tacoma DBLC along with installing a backup camera while i'm in the dash and wires. Im looking for a camera setup that is really stealth like, if not factory looking that will work with my new head unit. Anyone know if a camera/tailgate handle off a 2010+ tacoma would fit in the tailgate of my 2008? I haven't done a side by side comparison but I am sure someone knows. I'd much rather go that route if possible rather than buying an high priced after market one with a stupid key tumbler that i'll never use.

I have the same set of interests, so am joining in. I have a 2006 Tacoma AC with a Pioneer AVIC-X9115BT Nav system which plays video

Pop & Locks with the key and camera is an option, but I also have not been impressed with the general consensus on reviews.

I am also interested in whether a later tailgate and/or tailgate handle (with camera hole) would fit. My tailgate has a bit more character (scratches, dings, dent..) than one might like.

I would also like to know what the dimensions and keeper mechanism is on the OEM and Pop&Lock is.

My current plan is to use the Pioneer camera system http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Accessories/Rear-View-Cameras/ND-BC6 since it mates well with my current Pioneer monitor. Basically it allows me to view in reverse, but also to view rearwards during travel by selecting a mode on the screen. I do not believe I would have that option if using a more generic version. I think I would only be able to use only the option based on if I the ACC power or rear light power I tapped into.

I hope this complements, rather than competes the original post.

Called The local Toyota dealer/parts department. The OEM tailgate handles with cameras do not fit the tailgates of the ones that are not offered with a camera.

A few mods here and there and counting....
Heres the breakdown. Tailgate handles for 2nd gen are all the same. The difference with the factory back up camera model is a portion of the actual lift handle is reduced in size to accommodate the back up camera. I have installed an aftermarket back up camera(custom fabricated mounts) into a 2011 oem handle on my 07. It is wired up to a Pioneer avic z2 and has worked flawlessly. Don't waste your money on the pioneer specific camera. There are tons of aftermarket options for a fraction of the price. They all pretty much have 3 wires, 12v, ground, and video input. I bought my camera off ebay for less than $15. The oem handle was purchased from a member in the classifieds section for $30.

Say whaaaat? So the parts guy at Toyota was full of it huh!?
So I can buy the "OEM style camera handle" from Amazon and get the camera off eBay and be fine?

What a small world, I also have 2008 Tacoma :)
I recently purchased Pioneer AVH-4000NEX and installed parking brake bypass and ran HDMI cable to the center console. While I had everything removed I figured out that I can run the cables my self and install it instead of paying $200 just for installation.

There's so many brands and I'm not familiar with any of them.
I like this type that goes around license plate http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_23536_Absolute-CAM2000CCDB-Black.html

If someone could shed some light on at least what brands are popular that would give me at least something to search for.

    TIA

Yes- I upgraded my 07's tailgate handle with a used OEM handle out of a '10 truck. Here's what mine looks like.
