2008 Prerunner, the ignition switch is so worn that when the engine running i can pull the key out when its running or any position really NOT just in the OFF position.
My key has a chip in it and im just wondering how the engine keep running with the key pulled out and with the switch in the ON position.
Or is it once the switch is unlocked by the key nothing else matters. In short just wondering if my ignition system is still protected from someone a thief possibly trying to jam and screwdriver or something into the ignition switch hole and starting the engine.

The Immobilizer won't kill the engine once it has started, it only prevents the engine from starting if a non-registered key or no key is present. This is by design for safety.

If the ignition is that worn out I'd fix it sooner rather than later because it may be only one cycle away from not turning on at all, at that point only option is to drill it out.

Well i think the key is also worn out too. Maybe I will try my other key if it is tighter.

I mean typically you replace them as a set, new lock cylinder and 2 new keys.

Aftermarket ones typically come with 2 new keys that wont match your existing door locks, OEM ones typically can be keyed to your current keys so you keep the same key for everything.

New keys must be programmed to the truck with a scan tool, you must have at least one master key present that is already programmed to program additional keys.

Switched to the other key hadnt used in years. The old key was just so worn it would pull out. The other key now cannot be pulled out and can tell it is not as worn.

There is a key cut code tied to the VIN that can be looked up by the dealer or a locksmith with the right certifications.

New vehicles should have the key code tag attached to the keys when you purchase them but those are often lost or discarded, I have the key code tags for both my Tacoma and my 84 F250.

Remember if you have an Immobilizer the keys still have to be programmed to the truck after they are cut.
