My 16 yr old son bought his first truck, a 2008 Tacoma pre runner. During Christmas Holidays he installed a new radio and wiring harnesses that he ordered from somewhere. After installation, his tail lights, gear shift lights and lights behind the AC knobs were out. We replaced the fuse and the lights immediately started working, but his radio would not work. You could pull the good fuse out and the radio would work.
We took the radio out and found a loose wire and he had the orange dimmer wires together. Fixed that, radio works and the lights work now. ( we still wonder about the orange wires on the back of the radio, no clue what to do with them. orange and a orange w black stripe)

The next day he noticed that when he cuts his truck off, his headlights will stay on after the key is off. We are unsure if this is tied in with the craziness of his radio or if there is some sort of sensor for the headlights.

He can cut the lights off manually, but he is worried that he will forget when he drives to school in the a.m. I am not mechanical in any way, just trying to help him with any ideas as to where to look

No sensor for the headlights. They should turn off w/ the keys out of the ignition. My '08 has recently had the headlights turning on by themselves while the truck was parked. I haven't seen it happen since a week or two ago and havent been able to track down a culprit yet.

Someone w/ more audio knowledge will likely chime in and help I.D. the wiring and colors, or at least provide you w/ a diagram. You might want to check the audio section as there's probably a schematic posted in there already.

Depending on where the radio came from, most places have a plug and play connector for the factory harness so there is no splicing.
