    Dealer did not tell you

sorry > you buy a vehicle and have no clue about open diffs, limited slip , traction control ?

Jeep Rubicon advertise that they have "lockers" Jeep Wranglers do not have lockers .
Yours is not a dealer problem - do not blame others for what is your fault in this matter

In all fairness, did you look at the window sticker, did you ask about traction control, did you test drive it, did you ask where the switches were for lockers or LSD? Of course the A-TRAC and TRAC was not avaialable until 2009 on the Tacoma, but the rear locker was always available on the Off Road TRD.

Trade up to a 2010 (Off Road TRD 4WD)! Toyota dealers are hurting for sales with this bad PR the U.S. media is giving them.

Guys, I really like my 2008TRD Sport....and I am going to keep it till the doors fall off....but I don't understand 4wheel drive and mechanical LSD.

I stuck my truck yesterday evening. In 4hi i think just a tire was spinning...in 4lo i don't have a clue. I was with my 5 year old and she was not a lot of help at telling what the truck was or was not doing. I do know that all 4 wheel were not grabbing. Honestly, I believe only one was trying...I could be wrong. I need insight to this situation.

Thank you for your time and concern.

On a side note. I lost my shoes under the mud. It was in the high 30's. I had to walk w/out shoes and socks for about a half a mile to where my wife could make it w/the Pilot AWD. It was brutal. Oh well.

Again, Please give me insight to this situation.

When you leave pavement, put it in H4. (period)

When you MUST drive through a questionable situation, like that lake in Ronin's photo, put it in L4 BEFORE you enter the bad place.

Give it some gas while turning the front tires left and right to grab onto something.

I'm confused. If this is the case, then shouldn't we be able to drive and turn with 4x4 engaged on dry pavement? The reason we can't is that both front wheels are spinning at same rate, no?

Mine has the LSD option btw...

No, because turning is going to affect the speed of the front axle relative to the rear axle. It is the center differential you are worried about in the instance you mention, not the front and rear.

You think MTs would have made it through?

    Back to the tire store.

Blinking means FAILED ATTEMPT, TRY AGAIN!

Solid Light means you are there!

Open Differential(s) (VSC-OFF mode) means the tire(s) with less traction gets the power and spins.

LSD (H4) slows the spinning and diverts torque to the traction tire.

A-TRAC is pretty close to what lockers do, makes both sides rotate the same... in L4 only.

I have already said so much about it in other threads, I will give you two sources and what they say:

    This from: http://www.sae.org/technical/papers/2000-01-1636

Active-TRAC (A-TRAC) is the system for off-road 4WD vehicles. This system consists of independent four wheel brake control system and engine torque control system.

This system applies the brake to any spinning wheel, and sends torque to the other wheels with grip. Therefore, the vehicle gets strong LSD(Limited Slip Differential) effect, and it has the same traction performance as a center and rear differential locked vehicle.

Because the vehicle with A- TRAC does not have a differential locking mechanism, it no longer has the phenomenon of tight corner braking, and it frees a driver from operating the differential locking system. Therefore anyone can easily enjoy off-road driving with A-TRAC.
    ===========================================================
    from: http://behindthewheelnews.toyota.com/

Active TRAC (A-TRAC) -- During 4-wheel-drive operation on a snow-covered road or in rugged off-road conditions, A-TRAC controls engine output and brake fluid pressure so that the drive force is distributed to the wheels that have traction. This enhances drivability in extreme road conditions, an effect that is similar to a Limited Slip Differential (LSD). Off-road drivability is equivalent to having the center differential locked and a Limited Slip Differential on both front and rear axles.
