I bought a 2009 double cab prerunner with the 4.0 motor new back in 2009. I just surpassed 65k miles. With used prices I'm considering trading it in but after reading up on it it sounds like the new Tacoma's don't fare as well as the older ones. I'm just exploring my options. Is the 09 known to be durable and relatively maintenance free?

My 09 has 108k miles and runs great! I will be driving it for at least 5 more years. Other than the regular stuff that wears out like brakes, wheel bearings etc you can't beat the 4.0v6 IMO.

Yes used vehicle prices are up, but so are new vehicle prices and the selection is smaller due to the IC Chip Shortage.

    Keep it.

I also have a 09 I bought new, now has 130K. I drove my buddies 2019 last year thinking I might trade up. Its essentially the same truck with significantly less torque, makes it kinda annoying for daily driving.
I can't see any good reason to trade.
Instead I spent a few bucks on upgrades to suspension, wheels and stereo.
I'm happier with what I have.

the older it is the less you care about scratches and dents, and the sooner you can replace worn parts with performance or off road stuff!

Well, it depends on what you want to take away from the newer ones. My 3rd gen has been fantastic. The real concern should be that yes, you can get stupid money for yours right now; but, what are you going to get/drive in the meantime? Also remember, they're giving you stupid money so what do you think they're asking for it?

My son is a sales manager for a very large auto dealship network in the Baltimore area, and he's telling me there is a huge shortage of new vehicles right now world wide because of a shortage of computer chips.

Because of the shortage, right now they are paying more for used vehicles than they ever have before so they can keep inventory on their lots. So if you are thining of selling, the time has never been better.

Unless you are dead set on something specific to replace it then I would keep it. Like everyone else said, you’ll pocket some decent money but then you turn around and pay premium price for what is on the market. Used prices right now aren’t overall terrible, but a lot of people are asking stupid prices for used Toyotas in the SUV/Truck category.

I’d keep it. I have just over 240k on my ‘09. If I did decide to upgrade, it would be a ‘12-‘15 2nd gen.

I think about trading my 09 (100k) about every 6 months, then, right now I think what am I going to get into? Prices are inflated on both sides, new and used, so depending on what you are trying to get into, may not be the best time money wise to do so. In short, I think about it, but so far have ended up just deciding to keep the 09.

I recently got a smoking deal on a 2014 Tacoma TRD OR from a family member and ended up selling my 2019 Tacoma TRD OR. After having driven both for a while now, I'd say keep your 2009.

The 3rd gens aren't as bad as everyone says, but they have definitely been "watered down" to meet the "demands" of the North American market. The 2nd gen Tacoma is much more truck-like and rugged. The 3rd gen is more luxurious and car-like

The 4.0L motor is probably one of the best motors ever made by Toyota and is used for the Hilux, LC Prado, LC all around the world for off-road applications whereas the 2GR is a car motor used in the Camry, Sienna, Highlander, etc. Gives you some perspective.

Keep your 2009. Not having a car payment is a good thing!

One thing these guys aren't telling you is if you do trade up to a 2021 model, you'll gain immediate acceptance with the hipster crowd in the third generation forum:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/3rd-gen-tacomas-2016.186/

Then it's martini parties, line dancing and carrying a yoga mat everywhere you go.

Absolutely sell it. That thing probably only has another 300000 or more miles left in it. And best of all you can take on a big car payment. I know if you’re like me you’ll look forward to that big monthly payment. And the higher insurance payments, you’ll like those too. And since you are a high mileage driver , about 6000 miles a year, you’ll reach 300000 miles in your current truck in only about 50 years. I mean 50 years will fly by in no time at all. This is a no brainer, sell that sucker.

I have an 09 that I bought new in 08 and has 180k on it. I sometimes think about getting new one but I really like this one. I've driven it all over the country. I have used Schaeffer synthetic since the first oil change and change the oil every 10,000 miles with a filter change around 5,000 miles. Every couple years I just upgrade something on it; suspension, wheels, tires, and it feels new again. Buy a new motorcycle or a sports car and keep the truck.
