Using both my ipod and my daughters ipod we had to make sure the volume is turned up high on the ipod. The radio is as loud with the ipod as it is regular.

It might help to get a Belkin iPod stand for your car... My buddy has one and it has no problem with the stereo

I've noticed this in my truck, it sucks... I think Toyota is covering their asses from people blowing the factory paper speakers.

Don't bother adjusting your mp3 library or adding a pre-amp. This will only ruin the sound quality. Mp3s are bad enough quality already. Don't ruin them anymore.

The best method, in my opinion, is to get an aftermarket receiver and tie into the existing factory aux jack if you have the funds. If not, then I guess you won't be able to rock out as loud.

IPODs and other MP3 players are more than capable of going will go waaay above a line level signal from their headphone output. They are made to amplify headphones. Usually about 3/4 of the vol is a line level signal on any IPOD.

Mine is the same. The Aux input is useless, because my battery life on any MP3 player is going to be crap playing at max volume all the time.

I am going to build a small stereo preamplifier so I can have the MP3 player at a sane output level and still hear it on the stereo (when set to a normal volume level).

Yeah, I'll post here when I get it done. It'll probably be a while, I have other projects on the bench right now.

The goal will be putting in an MP3 CD and checking the volume level, then playing the same song at 1/2 volume on the iPod, and turning up the preamp until it equals the volume when played from the CD.

I have the same issue, using aux and the volume on the ipod on max. It seemed OK. Wanting to reduce the wiring mess of the ipod, power and aux cord. I bought a PXAMG, it works really well sorts the songs, playlists and the like. Pretty handy device, problem is the line out on the bottom of the ipod is not volume adjustable like the headphone out. So the issue remains. I emailed PXAMG support for any ideas.

I did a good bit of searching and ran across the software called mp3gain. It makes a reversible change on your library and can increase the volume of the mp3. I have a pretty significant library and it took several hours to accomplish.

I boosted the standard output of my mp3s to 95db. This did improve the volume issue somewhat. But I do find myself bumping off the VOLUME MAX on the radio frequently. Keep in mind you can boost your mp3s to the point they are degraded. You can back the changes out. Use the adjust max DB without clipping.

I am content (not happy) with the results for now. But it leaves me with two choices replace all the stock speakers and run a small 400 watt amp. Or replace the headunit with something with more power and lose my steering wheel controls....

What is pathetic is I have the PXAMG in my wife's 06 Odyssey and it will rock your socks off with no adjustment to the mp3s necessary. And that is with the Honda headunit and 6 speaker system. I am very dissapointed with the stock headunits power.

I have the same issue with my 2010 D/C, low volume. I use the same setup in the AUX port in my Chevy and it works just fine, plenty of volume. It is definitely something with the Toyota factory head unit. Maybe something Toyota needs to address.....after paying 33k for the vehicle. Embarrasing....it works on a Chevy!

Yea mine isn't loud either, I don't really use it much though. It's not that I can't hear anything, you just have to have the volume maxed out if you're on the highway. The aux port on my previous car was the same way. The volume for XM is the same way.

Same problem here on my '11with OEM single disc/XM stereo. It needs a pre-amp. I just got an '02 Jeep Wrangler with an aftermarket Sony stereo (Of, course because the originals always get stolen with a soft-top and no car alarm...LOL).
It has a setting for input level for its AUX jack. I wish the Taco had that feature. I gave up on the iPod in the Taco and just burn CDs of the same music I have on the iPod and use the iPod on the Jeep where I can crank it up.

    cheers,
    Rob

On my ipod, I have a 30 pin charger AUX cable. It sends a line out signal from the ipod, so volume on the ipod doesn't affect the truck. Having the radio do all the amplification and bypassing the ipods poor headphone amp.
