Toyota trucks are not, and have never been, rustproofed to a standard where they can be driven in an area that salts the roads. It was that way in the 60s, and remains that way in 2016.

I drive my GMC in the winter in Michigan, the toyotas remain in the garage with storage insurance on them.

Pathetic yes, absolute fact, you betcha.

[First ride I owned was a 1972 FJ40, it rusted just looking at a bag of salt.]

I have a love/hate relationship with toyota trucks/SUVs. One one hand, they are mechanically sound, on the other, the frames rust at the mere hint of humidity in the air.

If had been in charge of Toyota, I would have been galvanizing the frames decades ago.

This is an excerpt from the original letter I found on TN:

    States included in letter.

CT. DE. IL. IN. KY. MA. MD. ME. MI. MN. NH. NJ. NY. OH. PA. RI. VA. VT. WI. WV.

    Letter reads

Toyota has received reports that certain 2005 through 2009 model year Tacoma vehicles operated in specific cold climate areas with high road salt use may exhibit more-than-normal corrosion to the vehicles frame. Toyota investigated these reports and determined that the frames in some vehicles may not have corrosion-resistant protection sufficient for use in these areas.

This combined with prolonged exposure to road salts and other environmental factors, may contribute to the development of more-than-normal rust in the frame of some vehicles. This condition is unrelated to and seperate from normal surface rust which is commonly found on metallic surfaces after some years of usage and/or exposure to the environment.

I mentioned that letter at the dealer.they said it only applies to certain vin #'s.In which mine is not included.I pretty much have my hands tied. They will learn when people start throwing lawsuits at them.I don't have the time or money to do it though.

It is only a matter of time until 09-13 are included... I hope.... Just in case you know, as it already seems to be a growing issue for the 09 group. My 2012 has signs you wouldn't expect but nothing near having the right to open my mouth yet I believe.

I have a 2015 trd pro the first week that I got I did the kbs under body coating. My boss bought the landcuriser 2 month before I got my truck and I told him to do an oil change @ 500miles. I already notice rust therefore I order Kbs for him and have extra to cover my truck too.

I started noticing some rust on some areas of my 2014 and I live in a state that rarely needs to salt anything (georgia). Very frustrating.

My tacoma is beyond any undercoating but I am keeping my 4runner undercoated.like I said I wanted to put chassis saver or por 15 paint on it just to get more time out of it until they recall them.(if they do)but they told me that would void any warranty unless done by a PA.licenced tech.I'm sure that isn't cheap.

So that's 36 years - ridiculous - I don't know anything but I bet I could find a vendor that makes rust proof frames in a week or two - 36 year WTF

    Hmmmm.

I live less than one mile from the bay in one direction, 5 miles to the gulf in another. So there is some salt in the air upon occasion. And we have humidity that is hard to match anywhere else.

I have an '04 Highlander with 107k that's been here it's whole life, and while not a full frame vehicle, undercarriage rust on components is minimal.

Point is I don't think humidity is the primary issue. Road salt is. Seems every rotted out Tacoma posted here is a snow belt ride or maybe something driven on the beaches regularly?

As far as the humidity thing goes, I live in nort Texas so I can keep tabs on this with my 2015. When I was under it today (7months old) everything looked great.

I've said it before. Of all the frame pics I've seen the ones from Pa. are always the worst.

Wow! I have a 2009 double cab. My frame is not bad mostly rust on the weld joints, but I am definitely going to hit the frame with fluid film!
