My transfer lines for my rack and pinion have rusted out (2009 2nd gen SR5 acces cab). I Wanted to change them but apparently Toyota will only sell the whole rack and I wasn’t going to have it especially when they were charging close to 1000$ approx before taxes. I really don’t think they’re is a lot of info online about this so..... Here’s what I found.

1- if your a half decent DIY’er remove the rusted piping. I had tried to do I quick fix with a 3/8OD compression fitting ..... didn’t work. So I cut or break all piping and used 9/16 socket to remove the adapter or fitting. DO NOT FORGET TO PUT PENETRATION OIL !! My fav (50% acitone+ 50% transmission fluid)

2- fittings are 14mm 1.5m thread pitch (O ring )going into the rack and going into the stealing column.

3- A difficult thing to find in Montreal ,a hydraulic company that can manufacture either the pipe or manufac. fittings and hoses for the Taco.( Tomorrow I will be calling all companies in my area)

4 - worst case scenario look online for Russels or Earls power steering fittings and hoses. Summit and Jeggs sell that sort of thing. G&f aircraft in California were really informative aka George.

My baby has been sitting outside for 2 weeks now. Keep everyone posted on my progress. Here’s some pics.

    Cheers Taco Fans

You can get metric to -AN adapters then use some hose meant for P/S fluid. But in the end I think that would cost as much as getting an aftermarket rack from somewhere like Rock Auto. Plus your time with the truck being down.

I had this happen 2 years ago, I replaced that hard line with a hard brake line, carefully bending it to fit the original's shape. Has been fine since fwiw.

I am neck deep in this right now. I have rusted lines. The source of that rust is the ac line right above them dripping condensation on the rack. I installed foam pipe tubing insulation with a couple zip ties. Anyway, the first leak I removed the line and mig welded the rust holes closed. Pressure test and reinstall, all good so far. 6 months later the other line leaks and I can’t get it out due to seized fittings. I used a section of 5/16 steel brake line and gator grips (compression splices). I had to do the two splices in place so it was a real joy. Has anyone found a solution to this? Would prefer new stainless lines under $100. I found a place online that builds new rack lines out of stainless but they only list tundra, not Tacoma. The Oring fittings are my only concern in fabricating them myself. If I install adapters in the rack fittings can I use AN fittings and hose\line? I am an aircraft mechanic so I have hose fab tools already. Thanks for any thoughts on this. I am having no leaks now but with a weld and two splices I am on borrowed time.

I'm up a creek. Mine just sprouted a leak on the pressure line to the rack.
