My Prerunner tranny makes sort of a whining/chirping noise when out of gear. The noise stops when the clutch pedal is depressed. The dealer says it needs a new clutch disc and cover and its not covered under the 5 year powertrain warranty, but its not a big deal if I choose top live with the noise. It would cost about $1000 because the tranny has to be pulled. Truck only has 40k on it. Anybody dealt with this and have any suggestions?

Yea, I have a '08 with with a 6-speed manual that the clutch disc spearated with less than 17,000 miles, had it replaced not at the dealer but it was not covered. Then, at about 65,000 miles the throw out bearing started to chirp on and off, then slowly got worse, to where it whined all the time when the clutch was out. Just, had the whole clutch replaced, because it started slipping. Had 131,000 miles on everything but the disc, it had 114,000 on it. I would get a relieable mechanic (other than the dealer) opinion then, drive it until the clutch starts slipping.

When you push the clutch to the floor , the pilot bearing supports the input shaft of the transmission including the clutch diaphram and clutch disc .
If you are hearing a chirping noise when you hold the clutch down to the floor , your pilot bearing is to blame . They run about 14 bucks .

The release bearing ( AKA throw out bearing ) is in constant contact with the fingers of the clutch pressure plate and is always turning .

If you hear noise with the transmission in neutral and truck idling without touching the clutch pedal , the input shaft bearing is to blame .

These are the basics of a manual transmission diagnosis

My 07 6spd has 107k miles. The t/o bearing also making noise. How many miles did you run yours before you eventually fixed it? It's a costly fix so will have to save up for new clutch, flywheel, and possibly URD sleeve.

Thanks for the advice. After some haggling dealer had agreed to fix. This sounds like I should expect to be dealing with this or other clutch problems in the future. Never had to deal with tranny issues in any vehicle I've owned and I always put more than 100k before selling them. Wondering if I should hsve gone with the automatic but I love shifting.

I'm guessing the t/o bearing was whinning for about a year or about 32,000 miles +or-. That was when the clutch started slipping(131,000). I had a local shop here in Pelham,Al. do the work, labor was around $450. Had automotive firction rebuild my clutch for about $135. The t/o bearing had to come from the dealer $100. Because, I've had bad luck with slave cylinder($35) going out a couple months after every clutch I've had replaced in the past, I had it done at the same time. Good luck!

I noticed it since day one. Went to the dealer, finally got them to hear it, then they wanted to drive another truck like mine to see if it was normal, but there were no other trucks like mine. 45K later, still does it.

The Dealer is lying that it isn't covered under 5 yr powertrain warranty. If it's a 2009 that won't expire till next year. I unfortunately am way out of warranty at 107k miles, I have the same problem with my 2007 6spd. Your truck has very low miles as well. Make sure the next time they check it out that they document it in the service request about the Throwout Bearing problem. That way you'd have documentation that you went to them while within your warranty period.
