    What hasn't been modified?
The spiral cable in the steering is a common failure. But usually only affects the crude control and if it’s really bad the airbags

When mine started going out, Only symptom was random dash lights would come on. I got recall notice... Put it on the "to do" list for like a year, lol. I was in a accident and airbag didn't deploy. Thats when bringing it in for recall moved to the top of "to do" list!

(never had any issues with cruise control, I guess it affects each truck in a different way)

First thing the ecu looks at during cranking/start-up is the coolant temp sensor. Hook up a little obd2 reader, get a coolant temp pid and see if you can catch it way out of its normal range. Sometimes they'll fail cold like neg 140 degrees and cause a hard start or start/die

I hooked my scanner up. I get a b2799 code. Engine immobilizer system malfunction. Ideas?

Yeah. Same thing with both keys. Going to take it to the dealer tomorrow for recall stuff. I’ll have them look at it. Sounded like they have seen it before

I'm about a year late, but did you ever find out what the problem was? I'm dealing with the same thing at the moment. Thanks.

    Brand new, been reading.
2009 by Tacoma will randomly stall. Throws 2 codes for each coil. Fuel pump will prime, and engine will crank, run for about 1 second and stall. Then won't crank again unless key turned all the way off and reprise fuel pump, then same 1 second run.
Let it sit overnight, next day starts right up.
    Happened 4 times randomly.
Checked resistance on all coils, checked fuel pump relay, checked ignition and c/ open relays.

    Lost!
    Thanks all

What are the coil code descriptions? Is it "misfire detected " or something like "primary/secondary circuit "?

    Primary/ secondary. P0351-P0356.
I thought it was throwing a second code each , but I might be mistaken.

So all 6 coils are coding? You may have a wiring harness problem, like a big connector that's not plugged all the way in. As best you can, check all the connectors including the pcm connector and connectors going into the fuse box, something might be loose.

Pretty sure the coils get power all the time from a fuse and the pcm controls the ground to fire the spark. The codes are trying to say that the pcm doesnt see a completed circuit through each coil.

Yes thank you. Checked all the obvious grounds, and all the obvious harnesses for brittle or loose. Nothing jumping. Doesn't seem to matter temp of car or outside temperature

So when the problem happens, check for power at each coil connector. If power is present then you know everything from the fuse box to each coil is good. Checking pcm control (ground) is a little more tricky, really need a scope to get a good look.

You'll need a wiring diagram to tell which wires are power and control

Would there be power at the coil when it stalls? And would it be Normal 12v?
