I’m having a rattling noise that sounds like metal if anything rattling pretty bad at low rpms. Been trying to save gas with these prices now and keeping it under 2k rpms i’m hearing a rattling noise when going through 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. Had someone tell me it’s the cat going bad but i’m praying it’s not because i need to pass smog within the next month. Wondering if anyone has had this issue or has any idea what the fix could be? 2009 Toyota tacoma Sport 159xxx Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked for loose heat shields on your exhaust system?
You can bang on the cats and muffler with your fist when the exhaust is cold and see if you hear anything rattling inside.

Check for anything loose for that matter. I’m thinking if it happens in low rpm, it may be something rattling due to general vibration, rather than a direct result of the flow of the motor, like the exhaust.
