    Hey guys, check this out.

So today I finally got to this tailpipe delete that I have been thinking about.

So I cut the tailpipe after the rear axle, and made a small tip to redirect the exhaust just level with the spare tire. I bought a 2.5 ID pipe, cut it down one side to expand it over the existing pipe. Then I used a 2.5" U clamp and put thread locker on the nuts.

The plan was to cut off the tail pipe and re-attach it with a doubler (another pipe on the outside) to hold it back in place for a smog/inspection type certification. (I am in cali so smog it is. Sometimes its just a visual and sometimes its a sniff test from tailpipe.)

After I took off the mud flaps (cuz it never rains here) that was the only thing that was sticking down below the body of the truck.

I really like how it came out!!! I think I might redo the tip and doubler soon but I think it looks awesome!

Nice! I've been thinking about doing this for awhile also. Do you have a stock muffler? And change in sound at all with this mod that you noticed?

The cut is made after the muffler, and yes its stock. The exhaust is fully stock other than it is shorter now. Sound didn't change at all.

without the mud flaps and now the tailpipe, it looks so clean....

Curious what’s the legal / not legal rules in Ca?
I’m due for smog next month.
I have an aftermarket muffler, and it’s choped just before the axle, kinda like one cat back that magnaflow sells.
    Would that pass visual inspection?

I agree, it looks great. Mine has a magnaflow muffler back tail pipe (previous owner installed, no purpose imo), and it's super low. It drives me nuts. Only good thing is it has an awesome tip I can fab up after I cut it off. Unfortunately I can't get rid of my flaps, but seeing your results definitely got the muffler delete on my list. Good work, thanks for posting!

I don't think that will pass. Luckily you don't have to pay until it passes usually, depending on the shop. but that means you have to get it repaired with that shop until it can pass.

So far with cali rules, I see it like this: (I haven't looked it up in a while, but basically in cali if its not stock it won't pass)
    • Visual inspection, and it must be OEM equipment unless it is C.A.R.B. legal and you have the paperwork.
    • They are looking to make sure your ox sensor and cats haven't been removed.
    • exhaust must exist after the rear tires/axle
    • some might argue it needs to be to the right most or left most side
with my modification, I plan on putting the part I cut off right back in the hanger and joining them back together with a piece of pip and two clamps so it returns too the stock exhaust routing....but again only if I need to

Here is a shot of it with the muffler in it, its kind of a weird angle but you should get the orientation.

I also put a lock on my spare! Apparently that is a big problem in cali!!!

BTW. The under side of your truck looks like new, that's awesome. I hear California is the place where cars live forever lol

Yea man, granted my truck has only 36k miles on it, because I don't drive it to much, I commute on my motorcycle out here because it never rains and I can lane split that traffic!!!! But yea 36k on an 09, not bad?!? With this 4cyl and the 5 speed, truck will NEVER die....

(just wish it was 4wd, but it actually might last longer because I cant/don't take it off road...)

Same here? Cycle, low mileage and all? Lol 2010 with 19k, but mine doesn't look as good as yours underneath (thanks to crappy Ohio weather). And I can't lane split :(
