Unfortunately the Taco's automatic has it's drawbacks. The vent at the bottom to pull water to cool it makes it disastrous when going through water off-road. If enough water gets in, it'll mess up the tranny and cost approx. $2000 to fix. The manual doesn't have the vent...I have an auto but wish I had a stick.

I love my auto, pulls way more then my buddys 6 speed. His truck struggles pulling a car behind it. Mine gets up and goes.

    None currently,
I have owned manual trannys all my life and a few years back bought my first Auto in a new 2001 Dodge Ram 4x4 w/ the 360 motor.
Drove that truck for 5 years and hated every min. of it. The damn thing would never shift when I thought it should and it was about as exciting to drive as an ice cream wagon.
Now, I am back in a standard shift on my Taco, and plan to keep it forever.
The gear ratio's are perfect in my opinion and generally it is so much more involving to drive. I do get caught out in the heavy traffic from time to time, but the clutch is so light it isn't or hasn't been an issue.
Love the Truck and love the tranny, so it just depends what your into, or use to for that matter.

My Corvettes an auto and my Tacomas a stick... I'll take the stick over the auto anyday.

I have had autos and they all ended up breaking on me (except for my 94 Suburban). I haven't tried a Toyota automatic yet, but Toyota has excellent automatic transmissions. I actually really like the Tacoma automatics, but I wasn't going to pay the price premium since I plan to rip out the engine anyway.

I really got the manual tranny because it was reliable and easy to do an engine swap on. The current automatics use the intake header pressure to gauge what gear it should be in. I am going to a turbo diesel. The turbo would make that header pressure seem astronomical to the transmission computer. In other words, the automatic would just be too complicated to do an engine swap on.

Besides, I love driving a manual. I feel like I am in control of what the truck is doing. :)

Welcome to the boards. Nice truck you just picked up, and REALLY nice car!

Let me be the first to chime in and say that if you're considering any modifications to the Tacoma you should start with an engine swap. That 'Vette would make a sweet donor!! :D

    1) Safety Enhancements - Air curtain and side air bags! Bravo

    2) Leather package

    3) New colours - discontinue some existing colours.

    4) Std and Auto to be available...

A few of the changes for 2009 are redesigned tail lights that are L.E.D. format. All reg cabs whether sr5 or plain will no longer be available with bucket seats. A new red color and the grill insert will be argent instead of black. On the high end models, the headlamp chrome is smoked. May is the introductory date to dealerships. Interior change is limited to a new fabric pattern and center dash to accomadate navigation radio.

On the 2009 Trundra, 2 limited edition (only 2000 built) Rock warrior and a 2wd sport model. Color limited to red, white and possibly a third color. 5.7L engine only choice. Fully optioned with special wheels to that particular model. At this time, there is a 9 week wait for this model.

There is NO V8 engine opt in the Tacoma in the near future.

Hey guys, just saw all your posts, and decided to join also to clear up all your questions. I work for Toyota so.....

2009 Tacoma, they are changing it

ATRAC traction controll like the FJ
SR5 included back up camera in rear view mirror
    Standard Side airbags
    roof mounted speakers
exterior very similar, LED tail lights is about the biggest change
    new colors though
    Pyrite, Timerland Mica

And there is no plans for taking away the auto tranny. It gets better milage and its smoother and sells way more. Hopefully all that helps you guys.

I have a Honda Integra (in Jamaica we don't have Acura) manual transmission, and even though the v-tec kicks ass I only drive it late at night or on Sunday mornings. Bumper to bumper traffic sucks when you have a manual transmission it is even worse when your going up a hill.
