Bummer.... did some yard work this weekend and took some junk to the dump. Get home and I noticed my tailgate was bent. Drat! Don't know if it's something I loaded in there or it's from me stepping up/down on the center of the tailgate.

Don't think I was necessarily rough on it...but I do weigh about 240.

It's an '09 bought new in August and only 10K on it at the moment. I see others have had this problem with prior years.

Any one know if the TSB would cover a 2009? Anyone had a 2009 fixed under the warranty? (Searched but only saw prior years maybe being fixed.)

Dude, what did you put in there? I have an 09 as well and never had an issue. I am 200 and have stood right where that bend is and no issue. Loaded up my big ass snow blower on the gate and no issues. That sucks bro! Hopefully the TSB will fix it.

That looks like damage from an impact. Did something DROP on the tailgate?

Some landscape timbers, 2x4's, and other misc. junk from my shed. Was a medium size load.

I've searched threads but only replacments I've seen are on prior years (before '09).

Stinks - ordered an A.R.E. cap a week ago. Want to get this fixed so the cap door doesn't have problems closing.

Looks like shitty build quality. Take it to your dealer and raise hell. Time for someone to step up and own this type of shit.

Ouch... at least you're under warranty. I don't know the details, but I believe I've read that people have had the tailgate replaced & reinforced when this happened. I kinda wish that would happen to me. I have some scratches on my tailgate that I wouldn't mind having fixed on Toyota's dime :)

I am guessing you had your timbers resting on the tailgate, while the tailgate was closed and you were rolling down the road and hit a bump which caused your timbers to catch air, and then impact the tailgate lip.

Metal doesn't deform like that in your picture unless it was impacted somehow.

How exactly was your load in the bed?

    Loaded with tailgate down.

Never had problems with my 1989 I bought new and had for 15 years before giving it to my nephew. It's still in the family with 260k on it.

Well Taco_Mel, I don't know what happened... Perhaps it happened at the dump  I would definitely be paying a visit to the dealer and ask for warranty work. Buying a new tailgate would not be something I would wish on any Tacoma owner. Please do let us know how it works out for you.

Best of luck and welcome to TW.

I'm not surprised to see this happen. I taken my tailgate apart to install the Pop & Lock and couldn't believe that lack of structure.

I think I'll be getting a sheet of diamond plate to cover the tailgate. I seen it done before and it looked very solid and clean.

mine was worse and not covered under warranty, and well the expense for a new one is pretty steep (for my pocket book anyways) so i just did my best to straighten it and reinforced it with angle iron then when i fastened the piece to the top it came pretty dam close to straight. id go that route if i were you. i did up a thread on what i did if you search tailgate reinforce project, and there is also some more how to's on fixing it. best of luck man!

    edit:

    beat me to it

Thanks everyone. This site is a great resource.

Think I'll head to the dealer in the morning...then the body shop if that doesnt work out. I want the truck to still look "new" and not sure I have the talent/tools for the job.

I'll post the pic of my A.R.E. cap when it comes in!

There was a T-SB for the tailgate but it appears to be only applicable to trucks made between 2005 and 2008. There was some change in production that claims to have made the tailgate stronger with reinforcement...

    I found the T-SB here: http://www.divshare.com/download/launch/4099366-1f2

Visited dealer I bought the truck from. Service Manager says no to warranty coverage and no to TSB coverage since that is only for prior years.

Others beware... my experience shows there's still an issue with the tail gate.

Taco_Mel, that's nuts! Call the 1-800 number for Toyota Customer service and open a case. You can work that route, to have warranty work done. Explain everything over the phone they should try and help you. Many others have done it.

The bottom line is our tailgates SUCK. I have seen numerous Tacoma's around town that have bent tailgates just like yours. Hell I have witnessed my own gate bow in the center with only a moderate load on it. They need some serious reinforcement before they can be used as intended. None of my previous truck had any sort of structural issues with the gates and there wait also proved it. When you close the gate on a Tacoma it feels as if you just lifted your feather pillow to turn it..

i've read issues about this, i havent had any issues with mine
but when im on it, it doesnt feel really solid
so i have been paying attention not to overload it just in case.

Went to dealer where I bought the truck. Service Manager said NO to warranty coverage and NO to TSB.

Went to another dealer for 2nd opinion. Service Manager said he would check with the Distric Service Manager. NO to warranty coverage and NO to the TSB.

Needless to say I'm down on Toyota.

How many people need to still have this problem before they'll acknowledge the problems isn't fixed yet?
