My 01 3.4vc is nearing the 200k mile mark and I am looking to do a little preventative maintenance. I was thinking about biting the bullet and starting by replacing the timing belt, water pump, hoses and belts. None of these have been done before and I want to do the job locally instead of in a Podunk town in the middle of an extended summer adventure. Before doing so I have a few questions about different kits I have seen. I was wondering if this is an area worth spending extra on. Dayco has a kit for and $220 and ACdelco sells one for $380. Is this one one of those times where you get what you pay for or is the cheaper one going to do virtually the same thing for a daily/highway driver? Also how long should this instal take? How many hours of shop time should I expect to pay for? I have been quoted between $800 and $1200 for parts and labor from all the shops I have called.( 6 total with only 1 quote under a thousand.) I was thinking about buying a kit online and calling back to get quotes for just labor. Any insight would be great.

Do it. I have had good luck with on line kits. Time depends on a lot of factors, but a weekend should be plenty.

Yeah the timing belt should be done ASAP. Aisin is the brand I went with because it's the oem brand, I believe. Check out aircabinman on eBay, he sells the complete timing belt kit. It's what I bought for around $275 and then had it installed for $300. I felt this was a good deal because like you I was quoted $800+ from other local shops.
