Yeah, i started to notice that these newer trannies shift down as soon as you start coasting downhill or tap on your brakes...works well -- I think i'm just used to engine braking in my previous vehicle.

There is no such thing as manual "engine braking" with today's passenger vehicles that are equipped with automatic transmissions (especially Toyota's which are adaptive), all you will succeed in doing is overheating &/or damaging the transmission. Let the vehicle engine/transmission/brake electronic controllers do what they where designed to, which is slow/stop the vehicle normally..

If you must "engine brake" your vehicle (by habit) to slow/stop it, buy a manual transmission passenger vehicle, or a heavy-duty truck..

    JDM ,

have you recently had the tranny reflash TSB done ? I had mine done about 10 days ago and since that time have now had 7 instances of the VSC kicking in on dry pavement , the truck lets out a few beeps , and makes a growling sound that you can feel through your right foot .

FWIW , my dealership wants my truck back next week to have a look ,

To add to the VSC activation theory I'll add ABS.......Perhaps this kicked in instead of or in conjunction with the stability control. The first time mine activated in my '07 I pulled my foot off of the brake with a "WTF"? All vehicles are different and sometimes surprise us with their chacteristics.

    Hey OZ,

I have not had the TSB done. I'm not sure if my truck is applicable (bought it late Feb 2010), but my experience is exactly as you described. I definitely felt it and thought something was going to fall off the truck. Were you just braking normally (no engine braking involved)?

Maybe...I wonder if there's a way to differentiate between the two..??

awesome, thanks for the info OZ. this helps isolate the issue. may have something to do with our M/T's not gripping as well on pavement in conjunction with the TSB.

Maybe , but like I said , I've had these skins on my truck for 6 months , and I live on a small island and the road I drive is the main route , so I've literally driven it 1000 times since I've had my truck , and probably 400-500 times since I put on the MT's in all conditions , and the VSC never engaged in the dry until the day after the reflash ,

Update to this issue...this morning I was driving to work and I came off my exit on the freeway. Was going about 60-70 onto a moderate curve, so I put on my brakes generously (no engine brake) and VSC (or what I assume to be VSC) kicked in.

This grinding and beeping noise is not a great thing to hear, especially when someone is riding in my truck and thinks we're going to die. Is there any way to disable VSC?

Ah, I did get the beeping though. It beeps in for about 3 seconds (while I'm hearing the grinding)

uh.. press the vsc off switch

make sure you arent driving with auto lsd on. and braking has nothing to do with the auto lsd/vsc is only for traction lost. like others have said it probably was the abs or your brakes were over-heating. rtfm.

Nope, I felt perfectly in control and I'm on a well paved off-ramp. Took this turn many times on stock setup, only started to have VSC kick in after 3" lift and 285/75 M/T's installed.

Maybe the system cannot compensate for the larger M/T's?

I tried this morning, but I couldn't see a VSC switch. I have the switch that turns on/off Auto LSD:

...and the switch to turn off Rear Side Curtain Airbag. I haven't had a chance to check my owners manual (I'm at work)...which switch is it?
