I have a manual transmission 2010 regular cab Tacoma that I’ve owned for a few years. I’ve put probably 40K miles on it with a total of 170K right now. I’ve always heard these trucks are bullet proof but mine is burning through about 3-4 quarts of oil every 1k miles and rattles and clanks constantly with various levels of severity depending on if it’s cold or when accelerating. Really struggling to figure out what the issue it as 2 shops have taken a look at it and come up with no major issues besides agreeing with the high oil consumption. I don’t believe I’ve ever run the oil down too low as I check it frequently. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for or has anyone run into similar issues with theirs in the past? This truck is in near perfect shape outside the engine issues so I’d love to be able to repair it or swap engines if it comes to that.

The clanking COULD just be loose cat shields, or skid plates. Have you checked those personally? A shop might easily overlook those if they're trying to diagnose the engine.

Aside from the PCV valve possibly not working correctly or a major leak it's probably going by the rings.

How have oil changes been kept up with? Is the engine sludged up?

    Does it smoke when running?
If it is burning 3-4 quarts of oil in 1K miles it is going to smoke.

Have you looked for a leak?
If it isn't smoking it is leaking somewhere.

Have you checked the coolant for oil contamination?

Have you checked the crankcase for coolant contamination?

Post a audio or video of the noise it's making.
