    Hello all,

I am experiencing a mechanical/engine rattle when accelerating between 1-2.5k RPM. It’s been bothering me, at times it sounds like the motor is about to grenade itself. I’ve read a couple of threads mentioning heat shields, however I went under my truck and banged up against them and there wasn’t much of a rattling sound - especially not one like I am getting under acceleration load. It’s weird, it seems to go away completely after passing 2.5k RMPs. Any ideas/point me in the right direction? It’s making me want to get rid of the truck

Is it preignition/knocking? Try running a tank of premium gas to see if the rattle goes away. If it does then that proves it's preignition.

It's probably just preignition. These trucks do it pretty bad sometimes.
Mine currently has a 2 month old tank of 87 in it and when I drove it this past weekend it just about sounded like a diesel under light acceleration.

I wouldn't worry about it. Run some premium in it and see if that fixes it.

I recently had a similar issue. Truck started ticking/rattling on acceleration at low rpm and getting progressively worse.
First thought it was an exhaust leak or heat shields, couldn't find any issues there. Went to change the spark plugs and found oil on one of the spark plugs on the front cylinder, passenger side. I also had a small oil leak from the front corner of the passenger side valve cover that I thought wasn't a big deal.
Turns out the oil was leaking on the inside as well, down into the spark plug tube, onto the spark plug causing the issues. Replaced valve covers & spark plug tube seals, no more oil leaking onto spark plug. Problem fixed.
So, if you have a valve cover leak and a loud ticking sounds there is a good chance they're related. Hope this helps.
