    Hi guys,

Been awhile since I've been on, but does anybody know what could be wrong with my steering? There is no loss of power, but there is a squealing sound when I turn while moving slowly or stopped. I can even hear noise in the small amount of play there is when the engine is not running. The fluid is good and the vehicle does not even have 50000 miles. Been looking at rack and pinion posts as well as anything related to the pump and belt. Trying to avoid a diagnostic fee at the dealership. Thanks for any help.

Two things come to mind: the steering pump and a severe alignment problem.

The steering pump will often make the most noise when cold. Check for proper fluid level. Has the fluid ever been changed? Noisy pumps frequently have air in the fluid and will make squealing noise.

Try to find some smooth concrete and do some tight turns at slow or medium speed. Vehicles with alignment issues can squeal like stuck pigs on these type of turns.

    Thanks for the reply.

I am embarrassed to say that the problem had nothing to do with the steering and more to do with the fact that my Total Chaos Uniballs we're making the racket. Some Teflon drops fixed it right up.
