I seem to have rounded the edges on the fill plug on my front diff today. The socket slips and now I'm having some difficulty getting the socket to bite. I think I can but I'm reluctant to push it since I don't have a replacement on hand (if it is but I manage to get it off I probably won't want to put it back on...). Assuming worst case scenario, what am I looking at? I can't believe that I'm the first idiot in the world to ever do this...

Get a new bolt from the dealer, then break out the vice grips.

You're not the first. Chuck Norris works weekends at the Tacoma plant tightening those plugs down. First time always sucks.

A plausible error would be trying to use a 3/8" hex instead of a 10mm. The 3/8" very nearly fits, but it'll strip it every time...

Thanks for the replies. I think I have enough bite but I don't want to push it without a replacement. Will pick one up tomorrow and give it a try. If it doesn't work it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.

The only thing that concerns might is that I'm neurotic with this stuff. I feel the need to check the level multiple times even though I know its ok.

    Thanks again.
