Back in 2005 my daughter was born. Before she was born my wife and I had all kind of toys. 27' Travel Trailer, 2 Honda Rincon ATV's, Sun Tracker Pontoon boat, SeaDoo Jet Ski, and a 18' utility trailer that I almost always had hooked behind my 1Ton Dodge Dually.

We lived on a 3 acre plot of land that had been in our family since 1949 and spent probably 50-60k updating our house. It was a nice little house but when my daughter was born we decided we wanted to move to a neighborhood where she could grow up and have friends to play with. We lived on a busy Hwy and I was uncomfortable with my daughter there. We also wanted to move into a better school district (but that is a whole other story).

To get to the meat of the story... we sold every thing except the Dually. Then fuel went to $4.35 per gallon and my last fill up I had to use my debit card 2 times just to put fuel in my fucking truck ($75 cut off limit). I sold my truck the next day and bought a Prius. Not only did I buy one I bought two because my wife decided she wanted one also. These were purchased out of necessity because we bought our new house while we still had our old house. Two house payments suck so we had to make any adjustments we could. Times were tight and I took on a second job. We moved into our new neighborhood and everyone thought we were "treehuggers" lol

Unfortunately I dont' have many pictures of the cars (mostly because it is the only vehicle that I have purchased that I didn't want) but they did exactly what they were designed to do. Got amazing mileage and IIRC the insurance wasn't bad at all.

It had right at a 10 gallon tank in it and you can see by the mileage that it was over 500 miles on a tank with about 1/4 left.

If I drove it for mileage I could regularly get 55 mpg easy. I tried on one tank to see what the max I could get out of it and I maxed it out at a little over 61 mpg. It was a pain to do but it can be done. I never got below 50 mpg though. We took it on a trip to Galveston TX to go on a cruise and it cost us $37 to drive down and back.
As far as maintenance goes I don't know. Everything was included in ours for 100k when we bought ours. Hybrids were new and they were trying to entice people to buy them.

We finally sold our old house and as soon as we did I quit my second job and sold the Hybrids. I can't really complain about the cars as they did exactly what they were designed to do and they did it well. We never had 1 sec worth of a problem out of either one. I just didn't like them. I'm not a Prius kind of guy but sometimes you have to do what you think is best for you and your family. These cars filled that need.

I actually like the new Prius but I couldn't talk my wife into getting one so we ended up with this practical car lol

Good luck with whatever direction you decide to go in.:)

3 miles? Just bike to work dude. If you're worried about being sweaty or something, you can always leave a little earlier and just bike at a very leisurely pace.

This is assuming the route to work is bicycle friendly...

I would rock a prius, especially the small hatch back one. And on an insurance note....My mom just signed the papers to trade in the van we had while growing up on a new crv by honda and insurance actually went down. Now it went down by 100$/year, but it went down non the less.

My '12 civic now get at least 44 highway and ~25-30 city and its very nice to not really have to worry about the gas tank. Its also nice to put 20$ in and see the tank 3/4 full :p

Why would you speculate the cost of insurance? Just call and ask for a quote. They probably have a website that does the same thing, but sometimes your agent will save you extra money if they want to be "a good neighbor" or something.

I actually wanted a Prius when I bought my truck, but I couldn't afford it.

Being a dad protects you from all of the machismo ridicule. I think. Just say you're doing it for the kids and you're a hero.

You're saying a prius will hurt his man card and he can fall back on his kid as an excuse?

If you buy a truck for the presumed man card, you will receive a tool card instead .

I say get a prius and run it into the ground. By that time you will most likely have won the lottery and you can diesel swap the bish :D

As awful as the combination of a Prius and Boulder is...might as well go for it if it helps you out. I'm the same way in that I don't like most Prius drivers since most of them are Boulder hippie types :p

As long as you're still keeping the Taco, for the snow for sure, I say do it.

It's not for work. It's to my daughter's school. And while I will try to bike as much as possible, the expectation that my 6 year old, and I, biking to school every day just isn't realistic.

We have a 2010 Prius and it's a great car. Don't let social construction of gender and testosterone sway your decision. Cars don't have balls or vaginas, but everyone seems to think they do.

My wife and I drive the car and it clearly gets 50+ miles to the gallon. Compare that to the 60mpg that I get on my WR250x motorcycle that I use to commute and it's clearly a win-win, especially because I can't put my children on the bike.

Narry a problem on the Prius, except for the bottom plastic cover that needed to be replaced bc it was poorly designed. Also, remember that the safety ratings on this generation Prius are solid. This means a lot to me because we have two young children.

The Tacoma is a fun toy and I bought it to haul my bikes, but we invariably use the Prius for longer trips.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions. Also, check out the priuschat.com forums for more information on the car.

Ah, gotcha. I assumed the "daily commute" was to work, sorry. Can you keep the truck and get the Prius? This is obviously the best choice, but I would probably keep the truck if not because I can't see that a 3 mile daily commute with a 21-23 mpg vehicle vs a 50 mpg vehicle would make that much of a difference.

Oh, no worries... it's all good.

    I'm definitely keeping the truck.

It's just a matter of is the Prius worth the extra cost of insurance/registration/maintenance, etc.

If it's free I'd say go for it, at least it'll keep some miles off your Tacoma!

Although a Honda CRX sounds pretty cool too... Wish they were easy to find where I live
