I have decided on getting a new 2010 tacoma double cab with the trd off road package. Problem is, i can only get the short bed with the off road package? what gives! I could really use the extra foot to hold my quad with the tailgate up.

Why won't toyota make one of these with a long bed? If you have a short bed, please chime in and let me know how you feel about it. Most of the time i'll be hauling my quad or my snowmobile so that extra foot really does make a difference.

i think they don't do that because of the shorter wheel base and they made the off road edition just for that, off roading, with a locker and all that jazz.

I'm fine with using the bed extender but the issue is most the time i tow a trailer with 2 quads, and also have one in the bed. Is anyone seeing any issues towing with the tailgate down? I know a lot has to do with the length of the tounge but who here has towed with the gate down?

I tow a small (14') fishing boat with the tailgate down. Never had any problems. The boat never comes anywhere near the tailgate and I can back the thing up better with the gate down.

I manage fine w/ my short bed. Extender helps for large loads.

No problem with gate down, bed extender on, and sled trailer in towfor me. A sled will not safely fit in the bed, as for quads, 43 inches between wheelwells... So like many compact trucks, some newer 'large' quads wont fit w/o a wheel up on one side.

Well, I found out tonight that its pretty sketchy getting a snowmobile in a 5' bed. Built that nice box to get it up over the wheel wells, then found out the track doesn't sit on the bed enough to make it safe for hauling.

I love my '09 DC SB TRD OR 4x4...

I haul my BruteForce 750 4x4i with the tailgate down...

I use the bed extender as needed...

If it doesn't fit in the truck, I pull a trailer...

I've had my truck almost a year, and can honestly say that the shortbed has not hindered my use of the truck, and I use my truck as a truck...

I actually use all of the features of the TRD Offroad package, so to me it is worth more than the long bed...

And, it's actually taken me a few places that I couldn't have gone with the longbed...

Do you want the OR for the locker or 4x4? You could get a long bed 4x4 Taco and throw on an aftermarket locker.

I just don't feel like messing with an aftermarket locker, although in most cases i'd say they are probably built better

The 5 ft. bed in the 2nd generation Tacoma holds the same amount as a 6 ft. bed in the pre-'05 Tacomas... At least it did for me... I was going to get the extender when I traded my '01 xtra cab 2 door for a double cab four door '05... The '05+ Tacoma beds are deeper and wider than the '01 and held the same amount of equipment for me. I now have a 2010 4 door Off Road 4X4... It is awesome! Try it for what you need to haul... and get the extender if one more foot makes a difference... Don't settle for the Sport or the non Off Road TRD.
