Installing a cruise control on a 2010 tacoma automatic, got a cheap controller off of Amazon. The existing 4 pin plug on steering wheel has 3 pins in it, so I assumed it was pre wired. I installed and plugged it all up but nothing, do you think I got a bad controller or it is not pre-wired. Tried bending pins a little to make sure it was making a connection but still nothing. Thanks

That's the problem. The single cabs weren't prewired.

I looked into it for mine but it was more work than just the switch.

@PennSilverTaco had his done at the dealer but I forget what it entailed.

I've added to my '05 base SR, though I'm MT. I needed to add the clutch switch. Bought a kit off eBay and had to de-pin and re-pin one piece but my clock spring was good. Granted, service history from the PO shows a clock spring replacement in the truck's past.

I spent 20s hunting for my installation paperwork (I know I have it in a box with the extra unused parts in a bin somewhere) but didn't see it. I could probably find it with 20 minutes of hunting. Just not sure that MT specific notes help AT.

I don't suspect there is much of any smarts in the stalk itself, it's all ECU and then wire.

The guy I bought from on eBay had a ton of knowledge and a pretty good guide + troubleshooting.

From what I remember, the extra "effort" may simply include one jumper wire, which I likely have in my kit of spare parts. I do not expect it will take significant effort nor a trip to the dealer. The key is knowing the process.

I remember it as a blue wire but forget the specifics. I'm moving all my stuff to a new shop at the end of the month so if you are still lost by then I can likely find it and help. In the meantime, I'm stacked up in a ridiculously crammed garage with no heat and getting things out requires a ballet dance and extra strength fingertips while on tippy toes.

Has anyone done the non pre-wired install what I'm seeing on videos it is just adding 2 wires, don't want to spend 200 dollars for a kit for two wires I can make up is this right. Or is the kit worth the money already have the switch.it appears just a wire to the ecu and a ground.

This is the guy I bought my kit from. I'd bet that $45 harness might solve for you and I bet he can advise on exactly what you need if not, I'd contact him.

Some more chatter in this thread:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/08-2-7-cruise-control-wiring.480894/

It can be done, it's not too hard, no need to give up, but no idea as to whether or not your stalk is good or potentially trouble.

I do have at least one spare OEM cruise stalk but also not sure on compatibility across the various stalks, I think the wheel I have it on is Sequoia or Tundra.

I would straight up ask that guy what to do, he knows this stuff inside and out.

If I had a better answer it would be nice for us both for sure as I have a 2010 single cab auto. So does @PennSilverTaco so he would better recall the process.

I bought an OEM control stalk at my dealer and tried to have it wired in by my mechanic. After simply removing the airbag and plugging it in, nothing happened; I would venture to guess that your truck is not wired for it.

It is a lot more involved that I thought it would be, and I took it to a place H&R Radio in Warminster, PA that supposedly specialized in stuff like backup cameras and aftermarket cruise control. A good portion of the dashboard had to come out; I did not see the job, so I can't confirm this.

From what I remember, the cruise control has to be plugged into the ECU, and these assholes at H&R royally fucked up my truck. They had the truck for an entire day, and when it was time to pick up the truck, I was told that cruise control would have to be programmed by the dealer. Like a fool, I believed them.

A major clue should have been that plastic trim pieces had not been put back together properly; I took the truck to the dealer, and the dealer found that the clockspring and wheel position sensor had been broken. The cost to replace the parts was over $700. My dad had paid for the cruise control installation as a birthday present, so we went back to H&R and demanded reparations.

The owner of the shop went back and we could hear him screaming at the guy who actually did the job, but of course he denied it. The owner recalled me telling him that my mechanic had attempted to install the cruise control, surmised that he must have broken the parts, and refused to pay up.

I was livid, but my dad said we should just walk, and he ate the cost of replacing the busted parts because he felt so bad. My mechanic got the parts for me at cost and charged me next to nothing for labor, and go figure, the cruise control came right on!

On another note, within in months of my mechanic fixing what H&R broke, the cruise control started intermittently not working. The green "CRUISE" light came on, but the cruise control would not engage. So, instead of using the control stalk that I bought at the dealer, H&R asked if they could use the nearly identical OEM-style Rostra control stalk included with the kit; I thought nothing of this and said yes. I wasn't about to let those assholes touch my truck again, warranty or no warranty, so I had my mechanic swap out the Rostra control stalk for the OEM one. I started attempting to have cruise control installed in late 2020, H&R did their botched install job in March 2021, and it was well into April 2021 when I finally got it operational. My mechanic swapped out the stalk in June or July of 2022 and, go figure, it worked; I haven't a problem since!

Needless to say, my truck is going to have cruise control because I am not going through this again. I would definitely recommend having cruise control installed, as it allows to me relax on long drives and avoid speeding tickets, but make sure whoever does the job is competent!

Someone like Jeff Lange might be able to chime in but man, other than maybe having to swap the clock spring or adding a missing wire, I can’t see how the entire dash needs to come apart. AT doesn’t even have to deal with the clutch switch.

OK, now I’m just going to dig up those instructions I have. They were really good. That eBay guy knows this stuff well.

Somewhere, on this site, I remember helping another member wire his.
You have to add a wire to some plug. I will see if I can find the post.

I found my install guide along with a note that it’s different for 05-08 (2.0 gen) vs 09-15 (2.5 Gen) so I won’t post it.

However, below is the troubleshooting guide.

Have all parts ordered, but still have not been able to find any where what pin on ecu is for cruise on the 2010 auto 4 cylinder. Have found other year models but not the 2010 don't want to plug in to wrong one and blow something up.
