My check engine light and traction icon came on while driving. Took it to the dealership got a oil change which was due anyway. Tech says "multiple timing codes and light was not on at the moment but there was codes for timing. timing intermittently jumping time causing codes." I have a scanner and I'm only showing P0012 "Camshaft Position - Timing over Retarded Bank 1" before I took it to the dealer.

Is the default suggestion from the dealership is just replace the engine? Do they even replace solenoids or do camshaft sensor repair? I'm not spending 10k on a new engine. Everything I've researched says its the sensor. I'm kind of clueless with mechanic work. Is it dangerous to drive with this P0012 code?

Debating on just getting rid of the truck. Had it for 14 years and not about to put 10K into it.

I would definitely replace the sensor before doing anything else.

Sounds like they just don't want to mess with it.

    How many miles?

Do you have a rattle on startup?

If you do it's probably getting time for timing chains, if not I'd try doing the solenoid and checking/cleaning the screen first.

I got 197,000 miles on it. Never had any engine problems. Get my oil changed regularly and maintenance regularly. It does a have some timing issues every now and then but not constant. It rides pretty decent in my opinion. It doesn't rattle when i start it either. Nothing like I need to pull over right now. Just think a whole engine replacement is dramatic.

Make sure your oil level is good.
If it is I'd do the solenoid and screen first, if that doesn't fix it then it's probably due for a timing job.

I dealt with something similar a year or two back, just under 100k on my truck. A new oil control valve fixed my issue

When I got it from the dealership after the oil change, the engine light is now off. Took it home ran a scan and the P0012 still comes up.
