Hello, so I had a leak in a trans fluid cooling line. I was driving on the highway, started feeling like it was slipping, then reved up to 4k and seemed like it wouldn't shift. had it towed home. I replaced the corroded metal fluid line, put 6 quarts of ATF in, let it warm up for approx. 25 minutes. When I pulled the fluid level plug, 2 quarts came back out. Now, it shifts into reverse fine but when I try to put it in Drive, D4, 3, 2, L or 4WD it just revs up like in neutral. Every so often if I hit the gas lightly when in D, there's a CLUNK and slight buck then just revs. Any ideas?

That’s not how you check the fluid level.
You need to check it correctly. I honestly don’t think filling it to the correct level is going to fix the problem. But you have nothing to loose. And you certainly need the fluid to be at the correct level for these transmissions to function right.

See here for how to correctly check the level.

Check the fluid level again with the link above

But it sounds like it's slipping..

In general, most automatics give reverse a lot more line pressure than the forward gears.. so it's not un-common to still have reverse when the rest of the trans is toast

Thank you for the link, I know the first step is to make sure there is the proper amount of fluid. That link should get me there. If it still doesn't work I am going to have to bring it somewhere and hope the shift solenoid is the issue and not the trans itself!

Oook, so I went through the process and feel more confident the fluid level is correct now, had to add a little more than 1 quart, which means I put a total of approx. 5 quarts into it(It was a pretty severe leak). After, still doesn't go into D. I connected my OBDII reader and got a P2714 code- Pressure Control Solenoid D Performance/Stuck Off. Anything else I can try before getting it to a shop?

Not without a lot of work.
Knowing fact that the transmission was run that low on fluid, I can’t really recommend you drop the pan, and valve body just to inspect the shift solenoid. Mostly because I do t think that’s the real problem. Could you? Sure, I think you’d be better off finding a reputable transmission shop.
Do your research, find a shop with good reviews. Either by word of mouth or Google reviews.

    I suppose it’s worth tagging @gearcruncher , he’s the expert.
Personally, I think it’s time to let the experts (repair shop) look at it.

When the transmission gets that low on fluid , the transmission pump pulls all the junk that is laying in the pan and sucks that junk through the valve body and solenoids . The valving and solenoids get jammed up with small particles of metal .
I agree that you will need a trustworthy transmission shop to have a look at the codes and give you a better idea of what is involed .
Considering the truck is a 2010 , I will assume its higher mileage
I have my fingers crossed that its just the solenoid .

    Thanks for replying
I hated to tag you, as I know you’re a busy. But I’m not a transmission guy. And I don’t feel comfortable advising on things I’m not familiar with.

    2 things I don’t do are A/C and Transmissions.

Semi-reitred now . Sold the shop

Only 226 K but has the transmission been properly maintained over those years .

We’ll have to wait and see what OP says.
Anytime I hear a transmission dumped the fluid, and then was run until it slipped and had to be towed home, I cringe. I hate to hear that.

If OP has the tools, time, a basic mechanical skills.
    He might try a solenoid.

Me? I’d take to the transmission guys.
Mostly because I don’t know “a lot” about transmission.
Plus, if they “fix it”. And it still has problems, they get to fix it again.

If I “try” fixing it, and it still has problems. I have to try again, or take it to someone else.
Since I don’t know a lot about automatic transmissions, I’d skip the “me trying” trying part.

Absolutely taking it somewhere, as far as if the trans has ever been serviced? I will have to look back in the folder i got when I bought it. It had pretty detailed records with all dealership work done to it. I really want to hang onto it since it is just my weekend driver now. Everything else with it is solid! Thanks again for all your input guys, I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Update isn't good. I called a very reputable transmission shop in my town, told him(the owner) the whole story and named dropped one of his friends. He pretty told me the trans needs to be replaced. Most likely seized the pump and burned up the clutches due to running it on such little ATF. Told him the milage and he said it wouldn't be worth replacing. I had a coworker who knows a salvage yard if they had any transmissions or could find one, only ones they found had almost 200k on them.

I was expecting to hear this .
The good news in your situation is that it's your weekend vehicle.
You have some time to find a lower mileage trans

Hello hello, update on my Taco. So I found a used trans off of a site called AM Used Auto Parts, 48K miles on the trans, $1400 including shipping. Had it shipped directly to a shop that installed it for $500. Back on the road and shifting great! Thanks again for your input! Here is the link for the site http://www.amuap.com/
