I think something huge has been overlooked.

In the 2011 Tacoma brochure, there are specs and a picture of a Double Cab Tacoma that is not a Prerunner. It has the 2.7L engine and shows very good gas mileage.

The specs for the 2.7L engine (Prerunners included) are 19 city, 25 highway.

Wow, never saw that coming... That being said, it only comes in a 4-speed auto.

    Look at the specs again.

They offer the 2.7L with 5-speed manual on the Access Cabs only. The 4WD model with 4-speed auto gets 21 MPG on the highway, an advantage of 1 MPG.

    2WD: 21/25 MPH
    4WD: 18/20 MPH

Maybe this is old news. Was the 2.7L offered on the Access Cabs before?

Yeah the 2.7 has been in access cabs since '05...

The double cab 4x2 (non-Prerunner) only comes in a 4-speed auto, with no 5-speed manual.

    OK thanks.

What I find interesting is the Double Cab, Double Cab Prerunner, Access Cab all get 19/25 MPG with this 2.7L engine. It's crazy how similar their curb weights are.

I went through the brochure with a fine-tooth comb to look for pros/cons of the Double Cab vs Prerunner.

Stuff the Double Cab doesn't have which is standard/available on Prerunners:
    -No 110V deck mounted inverter
    -No front skid plate
    -No engine skid plate
    -No fog lamps
    -No hood scoop
    -No mudguards
-No colored bumpers, door handles, etc (apparently black or silver is standard)
-No optional 16" or 17" wheels, 15" is standard
    -No JBL Audio or Bluetooth
    -No engine immobilizer
-No electronically controlled locking rear differential
-No Hill Start or Downhill Assist Control
-No towing package (the 2.7L Prerunner doesn't have it either)

    Double cabs use P215/70R15 tires
Prerunners use P245/75R16 tires, with optional P265/70R16 or P265/65R17

Double cabs have 8.1" ground clearance
    Prerunner Double Cabs have 9.3"

Double cabs have SHORT BED ONLY

Interior dimensions look exactly the same

I'd have to compare prices to make up my mind. If it's over $2000 cheaper than the Prerunner equivalent, I'd probably go for it.

    What about you?

That's pretty cool. If someone had the time and inclination, they could make a Dcab Xrunner out of it.

Those of you with 2.7L engines, how do you feel about loading 5 adults into a double cab, whether it's a plain Double Cab, or a Prerunner Double Cab? Five adults could easily weigh 900 pounds.

The standard Double Cab shows a payload of 1235, compared to the Double Cab Prerunner (same engine) which is 1425.

In certain situations 1235 might be pushing it. (i.e. going to the airport with a few heavy suitcases plus carryons.)

    What do you think?

I always wondered why the double cab was only available in either prerunner or 4x4 and not with the 2.7L. Now that I see it in the picture, it really doesn't make much sense. The standard base tacomas are mainly fleet vehicles, you wont need to fit 5 adults in a fleet vehicle. I'm sure it'll sell though. Looks pretty bad however

It needs the v6 and the TRD sport package. Then it would look real good!

    I'm sure it will sell.

The MSRP appears to be $2000 less than Prerunner Double Cabs using the same engine. I think it was starting at 21 or 22K.
