Nearly 1/2". I'll just shave down the stiffener. It'll work fine, just annoying.

Finally starting on the bed, and the first step seems to be the most critical.

The frame rails are tapered, but I want a square bed. The current plan is to drill out the middle hole for the sleeve and then place the two end sleeves.

    y9e2uzym_63a81fa2c70b2a4612c006063a584af0522a17d6.jpg

The end sleeves will have to be cut into the side of the tube as they are not under the tube. The sleeve material I chose is 3/4" sch 80 pipe. The bed bolts have a nice tight tolerance with that pipe.

Once the sleeves are in place I will reinforce them, but I have to get them in the right place first.

So.... Does anyone see any issues with the plan?

Won't be a problem, just wrap some plate over the exposed sched 80 and burn it in.

Pipe is for poop. Tubing is for cars. Structural tubing of the D.O.M. variety is not very expensive, and exponentially stronger (and LIGHTER) than poop pipe. I know, I know, you don't care. ;)

You should be a beer can engineer.

I think every racing organization on the planet disagrees with you. Not that flatbed dude is racing of course, just sayin'.

Reading comprehension is a bit low on tw these days...

The pipe is to be used in construction of the flatbed and it's related attachment points to the frame...he wants a square bed on tapered from rails.

The bumper for all intents is 'completed' and will not be having any pipe attached to it...

The only "pipe" that will be used on the bed is for sleeving material for bolts. Not that it really matters any way. I'm not going to get into a pipe vs. tube argument here. I will say that both pipe and DOM tubing have a welded seam. :D

Oh, and the steel bumpers we have on our trucks are not designed for high speed impacts. The frames gonna get fucked in any high speed accident.

Depends on what DOM tubing you get. Erw DOM has a welded seam just not visible. Then there is DOM that starts out as solid bar stock which actually has no seam at all.

Well.... there's DOM tubing and then there's DOM tubing. It can be welded, drawn and heat treated to the point that the area of the weld becomes metallurgically indistinguishable from the rest of the tube.

Now back to our regularly scheduled flatbed build

I built them into the stiffeners for the receiver tube.

I'm going to look for something at Tractor Supply, if not I'll make something out of plate. Getting ready for some towing since I'll be moving after my honeymoon in November.

Your ATO high clearance doesn't have chain keepers?
